Audi TT (2006 – 2014) At A Glance
With its sharper styling the second Audi TT has shaken off the rather 'soft' image of the original and taken on a more aggressive look. But these changes aren't just on the outside. It is also more rewarding to drive with great handling and tight steering, yet remains comfortable enough for long journeys without feeling frantic.
When it comes to engines, the Audi TT Coupe also has the power to back up its bold appearance. The 2.0 TFSI petrol - an engine shared with the Volkswagen Golf GTI - is the pick of the range and offers tremendous acceleration along with a great engine note. Of course if you want outright pace, the high-performance TT RS is the model to go for, if you can afford the price tag and running costs of course.
But perhaps the most interesting engine is the TDI. This 2.0 TDI is capable of a very impressive 53.3mpg, a feat no other two-seater sports car can match. It means you can have the style and drive of the Audi TT but it needn't punish you at the pumps.
Inside you'll find one of the best cabins around with wonderful detailing and a top-class finish. It does have rear seats but they're fairly pointless apart from use as extra luggage room. However, that's one of very few negatives.
In 2010 the TT was given a minor facelift with subtle exterior changes including a redesigned front bumper and a rear diffuser. The big alterations came under the bonnet where the 2.0 TFSI engine was upgraded with extra power but also improved fuel economy.

What's a good sports car on a £5k budget?
"I am looking for a 2+2 sports car with small back seats. I have a budget of £3-5k and ideally want something with a decent reliability record. Any thoughts please?"
An Audi TT might be a good choice. Your budget will get you a really nice first-generation example (which is bordering on future classic status) or an early second-generation model. The latter still looks like a modern car and has a lovely interior. Buy carefully, though, they're not bulletproof...
Should I take the deal or get the clutch fixed on my 2010 Audi TT?
"My TT clutch has developed a fault. It goes into gear OK, but lags a bit on the way up. Also the window regulator has gone as well. I approached a garage who offered me £9000 trade in against a 2017 VW polo GTi, priced at £16500. Should i take the deal or get the clutch fixed? "
£9,000 seems to be quite a good trade-in price for a 2010 TT, particularly one with a couple of faults: https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/used-prices/Audi/TT/2010/ Is the dealer aware of the faults? If he asks "does the car have any problems?" you have to tell him or you will be in breach of contract. A 2017 Polo GTI 1.8 is good fun. Almost up to a Fiesta ST.
What can I buy for £10k that's FUN?

My current shortlist includes Reanaultsport Megane 250, Fiesta ST, Z4 coupe, TT MKII 2.0 TFSi manual and a Scirocco 2.0 TSI GT.
Is there anything else i should be looking at in this price bracket? I plan on keeping a £1000 year maintenance budget so a 987 Boxster or 996 is surely out of the question with IMS/RMS issues?

I don't think £10k gets you a Megane 250 that isn't knackered; maybe a Fiesta ST but be very, very careful; not enough for a good Z4 coupe because they are now classics and start at £15k; up to you if you fall for the myths surrounding a TT or a Scirocco. There's a Z3M in Historics auction on Saturday that might come for about £12k and a Capri 2.8i that might come cheap but might go skywards. Both of these would be investments.
Audi TT quattro rear differential damage
"I own a Audi TT quattro. The car is six years old and have 48,000 miles on the clock. Recently I had the car serviced at a VW and Audi specialist workshop. Two days and approx 50 miles after the service I experienced a loud noise and loss of power whilst driving at speed on an A road.
On inspection of the car by police and RAC the vehicle had suspected damage to the rear differential and was leaking oil. The car is now at the workshop that performed the service and I have been told the rear differential is cracked and needs replacement. I would like your opinion on what can cause such damage and how if the haldex oil change was performed incorrectly this damage can occur.
An over-tightened wrench not set to the correct torque when the plug was replaced. Specialist almost certainly liable.
