Can I mix all season tyres with normal summer tyres?

I have a 12-month-old Skoda Octavia Estate. The front tyres are worn but the rears are fine. Can I fit two all seasons to the front only? Is this combination safe and do all season cope with moderate snow and ice? If so which brand of tyre would you recommend?

I say no because when braking on snow or in cold wet conditions you could lose adhesion at the back. I think they need to be fitted to all four wheels. But Kwik Fit says yes.
