Passenger door will not open?

I'm trying to solve a conundrum which I doubt that there is a solution to. The front passenger door of my partner's Lantra (1998) cannot be opened from either inside or outside.

The lock itself seems to operate but nothing else. As far as I can see, the only thing to try is to cut away the inside trim panel but even then, I doubt that I can achieve much.

Am I missing something or is there a trick that I could try. My partner loves this old car and really does not want to part with the car but, with the MOT not far away, I fear that the car may be heading for the breaker!

No easy way out of this one. But before you take a knife to it, try to see if there is some way of getting the door panel off. There are usually some screws behind the armrest.
