Head gasket on a Fiat Punto - has it gone?

How would I know if the headgasket on 02-plate Fiat Punto 1.2-litre 8 valve has gone?

Might use coolant. Oil and coolant might mix creating a mayonnaise like emulsion under the oil filler cap, but this can also happen if the car is little used and the engine does not get hot enough to evaprate off internal condensation.
