How can I check the mileage of a used car is genuine?

My wife has recently purchased a Mazda 6 from Arnold Clarke. It is a 65 plate with 28,000 miles and is an ex Motability car. I am concerned the mileage is not genuine. There is no stamped service book or service history record. The interior looks worn especially the steering wheel and the SD card for the sat nav is missing. The stitching on the driver’s seat had also come undone at the back. Can I pay for a diagnostic check that will authenticate the miles the car has covered?

Mazda keeps a central computerised service record and, as the current owner of the car, you have the right to demand a print-out. Yes, if anything shows evidence of a mileage disparity, you have a case, but Motability cars are often driven relatively short distances. You can see the mileage recorded at its MoT here: www.gov.uk/check-mot-history
