What's the best petrol or hybrid on a budget?

What petrol or hybrid cars would you suggest with high mpg (45/50+) that have a high seating position and easy to get out of. I have a max budget is £2500.

With a limited budget, I'd avoid a hybrid car - you'd struggle to find a good one and you could face high bills when it goes wrong. I'd look for a small petrol car like the Honda Jazz.

My current car is a BMW 320i, bought new in 2014 and has 12,800 miles on the clock. Would my usage suit a hybrid or would the battery be a problem with such low mileage?

I'm picking out a car for a friend and would be interested to know what would be a good hatch/saloon for a learner driver at under £2500? Preferably a diesel one as he intends on using it for a long commute.

Clever interior redefined the small car. Most space efficient small car built. Very reliable first 3 - 4 years.
