BMW X4 arrives in July priced from £36,590

BMW has announced that its X4 coupe-style SUV will be available from mid July with a starting price of £36,590. All models will have all-wheel drive from launch, with a range of three diesel engines ranging in power from 190PS to 313PS. No petrol models are offered.

The X4 is styled like its larger X6 sibling, with a coupe-like roofline atop bulky, SUV-style bodywork. It’s similar in length to the BMW X3 but rides lower, despite having a much increased ride-height over a regular 4 Series Coupe. It's an unusual design and there are few obvious rivals apart from the Range Rover Evoque.

From launch there are three diesel engines, all of which are paired to xDrive all-wheel drive as standard. The entry level engine is the 20d, which has 190PS and 400Nm of torque. 0-62mph takes 8.0 seconds, top speed is 132mph and official economy is 52.3mpg with a manual gearbox or 54.3mpg with an automatic. Emissions are 143g/km or 138g/km, respectively.

There’s a significant premium if you go for the xDrive30d, which is priced from £44,890 in xLine trim. It has 258PS and 560Nm of torque and is only offered with an automatic transmission. Moving up to the most powerful engine – xDrive35d in M Sport trim – costs an extra £4100 over the xDrive30d. Power for this top engine is 313PS, with 630Nm of torque. It manages 0-62mph in 5.2 seconds with official economy of 47.1mpg and emissions at 157g/km.

Equipment levels are generous – all models get an electronically operated tailgate, 18-inch alloy wheels, parking sensors, 40/20/40 split rear seats and heated front seats. Moving up to xLine trim costs £1500 and adds satin aluminium exterior trim elements and leather upholstery.

M Sport models costs £3000 over basic the basic SE and get M Sport exterior styling, 19-inch alloy wheels, plus sports seats and M Sport suspension. Optionally, buyers can specify various high-tech extras including active cruise control, a colour head-up display and ConnectedDrive for getting online in the car.
