Drivers 'not convinced cameras prevent car insurance claims'

Wed, 05 Aug 2009

Not all drivers are convinced that speed cameras prevent accidents and subsequent car insurance claims, it has been suggested.

According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), most people do accept that this type of surveillance technology performs a useful job.

It went on to cite a recent survey that found 75 per cent of road users approve of the use of speed cameras.

However, the group added a significant number of drivers still feel the primary function of such behaviour monitoring devices is to raise revenue.

Director of research and policy Neil Greig stated: "Until that link is broken, it will remain very difficult to convince all drivers that safety cameras really do deliver fewer deaths and serious injuries."

Meanwhile, IAM recently warned motorists against dropping rubbish on the floor of their cars.

It explained items - like an empty can of pop - could become lodged under the brake pedal and cause an accident.
