Golf Estate V Octavia Estate v Roomster Scout - Von Ryan
Time to change my company car. I have been offered the choice between the Golf SE estate, the Octavia Ambiente estate or the Roomster Scout (all 1.9tdi). I have the Octavia at the moment ; so I would really like a change. So it's between the Golf and the Roomster.

The Golf is very similar to drive as the Octavia, a slightly smaller boot, improved spec and better looking.

Th Roomster is FUN to drive, slightly smaller boot again, similar spec to the Octavia but with marmite looks (you ether love or hate it) and I quite like it. My 12 & 9 year old sons like the Roomster.

I clock up about 27k miles a year.

Comments most welcome.

I love my "Roomie" for a lot of reasons. If your kids like it that's half the battle. Not that I'm an attention seeker, but people actually comment on it when I'm out. Its ugly but hell so have been the last three BMWs I've owned. Positive owner experience. Would I buy another ? - Yes.

Happy cars as they say. All the feedback forums are positive.

You've got a Skoda and considering another 'nuff said.

Can you persuade your company to let you have a 2.0 TDI? Doing 27,000 a year you'd enjoy having a sixth gear. If you can, it's Golf or Octavia.

If not, and presuming that depreciation isn't an issue for you (it is for me, so I have the Golf which holds its value a bit better than either of the Skodas) - then why not go for the Roomster.

They will not stretch to the 2.0 TDi. As it's a lease vehicle there's no worry about depreciation. My head says Golf whilst my heart says Roomster.

Stick with the Octavia it's the best out of the 3 by a long way.

Now you're just trying to confuse me even further!!!!

For what it is worth I would go for Octavia first, Roomster second, and I will leave it to the reader to work out where the Golf comes!

I'd have the Octavia first as well, but not sure which of the other two - if my money the Golf, if someone elses the Roomster....

I'd probabal have the Octavia ( I've had one and rate them highly) but I'm not sure I'd want to have two in six years so if I was you I'd go for the Roomster. I've had a VW and so have several of my friends and family and they all rate the dealers as rubbish or worse! That's a good reason in my book to got to Skoda or Seat.

If you choose the Golf, every time you see another Golf, you'll secretly wish you'd not followed the pack and dared to be different and chosen the Roomie. Of course, your kids will think you're a cool dad, show you loads more affection and generally behave themselves much better in and out of the car than if you drove a Golf!

NeilS - I really like my Octavia but would like a change, like you said six years with the same car!! When I checked out the golf; I did notice that the my local VW garage was very large and impersonal. Whilst the Skoda garage was smaller and friendly. I just may give the Roomster a go.

I tried both Golf and Octavia and felt the Octavia was a better drive. I don't think it needs the 2.0 - it is a bit brutal in a car of this size (1.9 is lower emissions and hence tax).

Skoda has slightly larger boot and better radio - MP3 CD player is an extra on the Golf.

I didn't consider the Roomster and am pleased with the Octavia which arrived 10 days ago.

I've had an Octavia for three years now and would like something different, my company will not let me wait for the facelift model or the new CRi diesel engine (out later this year or early next). So it's either the Golf (MP3 CD standard on SE) or the Roomster Scout, I'm starting to favour the Scout for something different.

So VW have changed the spec then - it was a £350 extra when I was looking in January.

Still can't get over the Honda badge on the grille of the current VWs!
