03 1.9 dci electrical fault after jump-start. - madatmegane

I tried to do a good deed and allowed to jumpstart their car via my megane 1.9DCI 2003
I dont know al ot about cars, but he connected the correct cables but think one of the cables was not touching the terminal- but instead that little pack that fits ontop of the battery & has wires and metal. He reved his car and mine cut out and came out and displayed a msg 'electrical fault'.
I had to have the car towed home. It is completely dead but lights, cd player, locks all work fine (although a message also at the time stated auto lights fault.
I do not have the cash to take the car to the main dealers and have been told renaults can only be fixed at main dealers.
I am well stressed and have no car.

What could be wrong and what are my options?
any help is appreciated :0(

Check fuses first.

On the battery terminal itself is a block of 3 main fuses - some are 400 amp rated.

One of those may well have gone - a quick probe with test-lamp or meter may reveal all.

I think you will find that the main battery power lead (thick red cable)incorporates a fusible link where it attaches to the battery. It is usually located under a plastic shroud which has to be broken open for inspection. It is possibly repairable but only available from Renault with the main battery cable.hth

I know nothing about cars (female lol) apart from driving! i had some have a look at it and he said he will have to take it in it will probably be the ECU and looking at £1000 ish? trying to get a second opinion. He said not possible to run a diagnostic- (don't see why cos power running through to CD player, lights etc but don't know if this is true or not?

any opinions? should i give him the car?

Anyone that says it's the ECU before doing any sensible testing is a shark - avoid.

As already said; this could just be one of the main fuses in the battery terminal blown. It's quite common on these.

hey thanks soooooo much for all the advice ur right, he was trying to rip me off , seemed so genuine though :-( ! had another mechanic come over just now, ran a diagnostic and apparently it was a 30 conecting fuse or something on the battery pack!
charged £45 for the lot (including coming out) and sorted it.
:-)

im sooo relieved
morale of the story- dnt get a french car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't worry I won't. I've seen enough of them to know that they're nothing but trouble......

Glad to hear it was something simple. There is a 30 amp fuse in there and obviously it's allergic to jump-starts.....

The French should stick to bicyclettes; they've just no idea when it comes to electrics.....
