2.0 Hdi - Erratic idle and low rev problem. - gnarleygritboy
Hi I'm new to this site so I hope I've replied to the thread, anyway have just bought a 306HDI estate (2000) have done 600 miles in it then suddenly every so often it won't go over 230rpm If I floor it about a second later it moves over this threshold until the next gear change, then I have the same problem in that gear too. I've also noticed that in traffic jams the idle moves up fro 900rpm to 1100rpm when at the higher rpm that's when the previous problem occurs, when at 900rpm no problems at all. Up to now I've had no warning light or anything. Is this just the fuel filter or something much worse? any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Moved as a standalone rather than linger in the nether regions of an older one !

The motor won't rev past 2300rpm?

Definitely a fuelling issue - I've replaced the high pressure pumps on these engines for a similar fault - it was some years ago though!!

So you have the check engine warning light on? Read any stored fault codes?

What fuel do you run it on?
2.0 Hdi - Erratic idle and low rev problem. - injection doc
Can suffer with throttle sensor problems so no big deal just needs to go on diagnostic test first. Like screw loose says what fuel do you use. I have had the HDI's where I have had them idle only & had to put concentrated fuel injector cleaner in the fuel filter, allow to run for 30 sec then leave to stand overnight then take them out for an italian the next day & then they fly. It is a known problem

Hi all and thanks to everyone who replied to my message.

Sorry to not get back sooner the administrateor moved my post to a place where it would get more hits, and I've only just found it.

To answer all the questions.

The engine light is off, and to make things worst the car's been fine for the past 3 days,

As for fuel I've just been using standard diesel, no biofuel, but I have only had the car for a couple of weeks so who knows what could have been put into it.

I've booked it into my local garage on Monday and will take your posts along as he seem to think it Could be more serious, (as did I when reading previous posts about similar problems).

Thanks again for al your help

After 250 miles of problem free motoring it has sudenly become a problem again. This problem seems to happen more in damp conditions. Would you say that this is still problems with the sensor or the filter.

Where do you buy your fuel?
2.0 Hdi - Erratic idle and low rev problem. - gnarleygritboy
I tend to buy my fuel from a local petrol station (and avoide supermarkets where possible). I have only just bought the car so it could have been filled from anywhere prior to this.

An HDi with problems is not good news; can you take it back?
2.0 Hdi - Erratic idle and low rev problem. - gnarleygritboy
I'm afraid not.

I've not changed the petrol filter or sensor yet though. It is also a little odd that the engine warning light still hasn't come on throughout this problem

Has somebody taken the bulb out?

[You mention "petrol filter" - this is a diesel HDi?]

Sorry I meant fuel filter.

When I turn the ignition on the engine light comes on, but that is something I hadn't even thought of people doing.

It's still worth getting the codes and live data examined by someone who really understands these horrendous systems.

This could be a fuel pressure regulation issue; worn injectors; throttle sensors - all sorts. Without info it's all guesswork.

Ok will get it booked in.

Thanks for your help, will keep you posted about the fault if I get to the bottom of it.

Thanks again for all your advice
