Ford KA 2003 Misfire...pls Help..EUC?? - DarrenDPB
Hello,

I have a late 2003 KA, that has the endra engine.

The car just started to missfire and the Engine managment light came on, so I thought I would have a look,

Looking at the car I noticed that it was only on No2 that it was misfiring, I pulled the injector multi plug off on no2 and it made no diffrence to the running. pulling any of the others of and it nearly dies. so I swapped the plugs round, and the leads. still the same .

I carried out a compression check and all was well also, I then removed the fuel rail and swapped over no 1 and no 2 injectors, still the same problem, just on no2... there is a real healthy spak on this so the coil pack looks like it is ok.

I took it to a friend and he was no 100% what the problem was, he could not get a decent reding out of the star tester, he talked to someone and they said coil pack fault can mess up the ECU, so you will need both! I have looked and tried find a part and can get a used one with a guarantee for around £60-70 and £28 for the coil pack. someone has told me that water can get into the PCM connection, on this model... but that was on 2002 versions... and was sorted with more sealer in the connection.

what about my Pats system if I change the ECU? will this need to be re done? and whats the cheapest way to go about this?

I have been out of the trade for 7 years now, is there any other tests or things to look at?

Many thanks

If you swap the electrical connections to the injectors, say swap cylinders 1 and 2, does the misfire move to No 1? There isn't the same need to worry about injector timing as there is with spark timing.

If so, then the fault is either in the wiring and connectors between the ECU and the No 2 injector connector, or a fault in the ECU itself (output power stage for No 2?)

I don't know enough about these engines to say whether the coli pack can cause this problem, but I do know they are a frequently replaced item.

Interesting.... You've tried all the right things; the coilpacks can fail and do sometimes take out the coil drivers in the ECU, but that loses you both cylinders on that coil. One end on a double coil can fail to spark under pressure if it's internal suppressor burns out; can you swap the HT leads to opposite ends of that pair [that's cyl #3] and see if it moves? This cylinder is missing at all revs, isn't it? If it's only at idle, there could be a big inlet manifold leak.

NC's test of moving the injector feeds sound like the best next test. Maybe the #2 injector driver has gone down in the ECU. Also; a star tester is a bit outdated for testing these. If there is a misfire code [P0302] stored; then the ECU will shut down that injector, to save the cat, until the code is cleared.

They are coded to the PATS; but getting your own unit repaired by someone like BBA saves any coding issues.

Thanks to both of you,

I did forget to say, yes I did swap the wiring round on the injector, no1 for no2, and it still stayed with the problem on no2. there is a really good spark on no2.... and its not just at idle....... the managment lite came on and flashes sometimes. what made me think of the connector thing was it was really damp that day. is this the sort of thing that can be used? cgi.ebay.co.uk/GS400-Pro-OBD-2-Scanner-Diagnostic-...m

what do you thing I should take a look at next? what else would be doing this/

Thanks again

If you take that plug out is it wet with fuel. Regards Peter

No2 inlet valve is opening is it. Connect a compressed air line to no2 plug hole and turn the engine over hy hand until you hear air gushing out of the inlet manifold. Daft but possible. Regards Peter

>>No2 inlet valve is opening is it.

Peter, that's exactly what I was beginning to think when I read Darren's response.

If everything like plugs, leads, injector, injector wiring has been swapped one at a time, and the misfire stays with No 2, then it is likely to be a fundamental problem with No 2. If the compression is OK, this leaves you with either of the valves not opening, or a blockage in either of the manifolds. Snapped rocker?

Thanks guys,

yes this is the Duratec engine, not the endura-e, are the tappets hydraulic?

is this a commont thing on the duratec?

Thanks

The OHC engine has hydraulic tappets so it could be a failure of one or a blocked oil supply.

hi
common on this model and earlier is water getting into wiring , creating a problem with ecu fix was to replace ecu and engine loom ,
check the ecu out and wiring to it
