I agree - that Mondeo looks dear.....

I agree that trying a broker is a good idea though there are a couple of specialists near us who sell a lot of ex Ford management top spec Mondeo's at 6 to 12 months old for between £15k and £16k.

UK Carbroker list the Mondeo 2.2 TDCi Ghia X hatch at £14915 = £350 for metallic.
Motorpoint have a Mondeo 2.2 TDCi Ghia X estate, 10325 miles, 55 reg for £12999.

Is that for quantity of spares and reapired required? (only joking!)

The Mondeo is a great car to drive with that TDCI engine.

ford dealers seem to have lost the plot with spares availability and prices these last 5 years.

I've certainly been a bit shocked by some of the parts prices on my Mondeo mk2:
Right hand engine mounting rubber - £105 + VAT
CV joint - £78+VAT
Water pump - £94 + VAT
Fixed the first with a secondhand part, and the latter two with a well known brand pattern parts costing less than half as much in both cases.
I was also quoted £140 for a window regulator, although thankfully a squirt of silicone lube seems to have resurrected the existing one. The currently tired clutch when it goes is going to set me back about £500.
I think parts prices on my Mondeo are higher than on SWMBO's old Pug 306. Thankfully, it doesn't go wrong much. Touch wood.
Cheers

I have been quite please with the price of the odd parts I have bought from Ford likewise Renault, in fact genuine Renault service items such as oil and air filters are cheaper than Halfords.
However I enquired about a window rubber recently for the wife's Clio and was told that kit costing £104 per door was the only way of getting the part, out of interest I asked the Ford dealer for a price for the eqivalent part on the Mondeo - £8.76.

I have been quite please with the price of the odd parts I have bought from Ford. If they are available.
I wanted a small strip of rubber that clips to the top of a Focus headlamp.
It was attached to a strip of plastic (that had turned to powder) and that was held on with little spire clips.
On no sir, that is part of the headlamp so you need to pay for a whole new headlamp. I think NOT!

Yes, I have had that said to me countless times over the last 30 years or more and I am not sure that it necessarily holds true any longer. For example, I was also told that the Citroen Xantia that we had for twelve years, would end up being a money pit but I never paid out a lot on that car for spares, repairs or servicing.

I'm a bit of a Volvo fan, and usually choose them over and above the competition, but in this comparison I have to say the Mondeo is far more attractive to me. The 2.2 engine is supposed to be a cracker, and £73/month is well worth having in your pocket.
Much as I like the V70, I think they are habitually overpriced, and the design is now just starting to look dated.

What I have found though is that Fords have a huge choice of pattern parts available, and they are at very keen prices. My water pump was a classic example:
Ford OEM: £94 + VAT
Quinton Hazell item from local motor factors: £ 32 + VAT
On other parts such as timing belt kits, brake pads and discs, and particularly service parts such as oils and filters, Ford dealers can supply original stuff either cheaper or the same price as Halfords or factors supply pattern parts. Some of the original bits can be eye wateringly expensive though. I've never known a water pump cost a ton, even on a BMW or Audi.

I haven't driven the Volvo but have got a '05 Mondeo ST with the 2.2 diesel. Suspension is obviously firmer that the Ghia or Titanium but I love the car. Not had it long enough for any bills yet. Paid as much as we wanted to for a car so if it was a case of saving money I wouldn't hesitate. That £74.00 a month is going to go a long way towards service or any repair costs.
|
And let's remember there are so many Mondeo TDCi the percentage with problems is very low - so you're unlucky if you do. I've had problems with most of my cars (Vauxhall, VW, Audi and Ford ... all company cars) so I'm the unlucky one.
And an '05 car is still well in warranty too.

Given the choice of a new car @ £15-£16K and the same model 2nd hand at £15,999 I think I know which car i would buy.
"Ford Ex Management cars" - Can be Ex Fleet Day Hire cars registered as Ford Rentals as often as not.
Not that ex-rentals are bad cars - I bought 2 - 1 knowingly and 1 where I was deceived - both were excellent - Astra sold @ 75K miles bought with 8K and 2nd one bought with 2K miles and I still ahve it at 44K - neither required much more than servicing & consumables. Both needed gearbox (1st/2nd & Reverse) repairs within a few months but as it was warranty it was OK.
