whining noise 306 hdi - I know nothing!
Over the last week my car has had a whining noise to it when i drive, it judders when i pull away and when i put my foot on the clutch the engines noise changes, I do have it booked into the garage tomorrow but I just wondered if anyone could help me as to what it may be and rough cost, I hate going to garages I know nothing about cars and they could tell me anything and I would believe them. (yes I am a silly woman)

Can you be any more specific about the whining noise? Is it the same pitch and volume all the time or does it change with acceleration or revs? How does the engine noise change when you put your foot on the clutch? Is there any noise when the engine is ticking over in neutral gear, and does any noise come or go when you put your foot on the clutch from neutral and a standstill?

Cheers

The noise is not there when the car is idle only when i am driving it, it gets noisier the faster i drive and a little higher pitched. the engine noise is heard to describe, it gets deeper and a bit rattly. yes the noise comes and goes when i am in neutrel and at standstill and i put foot on the clutch and when i take it off.
Not sure if this is related but my car is also having to be refilled with water a fair bit too.

Thanks

Does it start when you put your foot on the clutch and go when you lift your foot of, or is it t'other way around?

Yes the noise starts when i put my foot on clutch and stops when i take it off.

Sounds like the clutch release bearing. You're probably looking at a new clutch (it's false economy to change individual clutch parts). It should cure the judder as well which is another symptom of a worn clutch.

Depending on where you're getting it done, I would guess somewhere around the £200-£250 mark, but maybe someone who has had this done will be more accurate. If they say they need to change the whole clutch though, that is standard practice - they're not ripping you off.

What's the mileage on the car?

Should add re: cost, the majority of the cost of a clutch change is labour (they have to remove the gearbox to get access to it), so it pays to shop around.

I didn't swear honestly :-) {I'm afraid you did, hence why the swearfilter nabbed it. Please refrain from doing so, as per the site policy on swearing - www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=33415 - DD}

I said oh pink fluffy dice I thought it would be an expensive job.

On the plus side, once it's done it should out-last the car.

It's impossible to be 100% sure obviously but a whining or squealing noise when you press the clutch pedal is a pretty conclusive symptom.

Let us know what the garage says.

Thanks for your help.

New clutch kit is around £100*, and the book time is about 5 hours to fit it - so anything from £200 upwards in labour, depending on your garage's rate. You should also ask them to change the input shaft seal and guide - this part costs < £10 and only takes a few minutes to change once the box is out.

*Unless it's a 110, in which case it might have a dual mass flywheel - and that is a whole lot more expensive....

The water loss is probably the radiator - a new one will probably be around £200 fitted. Make sure that the carpet in the passenger foot well is not wet though - if it is, then the leak is probably the matrix, and this is more like £600 fitted - might not be worth doing the clutch then....

Having changed a 306 HDi clutch earlier in the year, I'd like to see someone do it in 5 hours....!

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

I thought they only made the 306 HDi in the 90bhp variant? I've never come across a 110bhp version. Would be nice though- my next car if I can find one when my old 1.9TD gives up the ghost!

How old is it?

The 306's never had DMF's, I did plenty of research when I had mine!

I know whats wrong now, I had to call out RAC, I was driving along and everytime I pressed the clutch it squealed and there was an awful burning smell, there was no way I was driving any further I was worried it would burst in to flames. Called out RAC and apparently my clutch release bearing has gone, and RAC bloke said that it would mean having whole clutch replaced, best quote I have had so far is £268inc, does that sound good, Im in southampton by the way.

If that includes both supply and fit then yes £268 is good- I take it that price also includes VAT? If it doesn't then it's about another £40 on top which still isn't too bad. I was quoted several figures between £220 and £300 to have the clutch replaced in my 1994 306 1.9TD a year ago.
