Last time I stripped down a wheel bearing for my old trailer I seemed to recall from my days in engineering that just about any bearing can be identified and resourced from a bearing stockist via the number stamped on the outer race.
I didn't need the bearing, I just regreased the old one, so I never tried getting one. I would have imagined getting one would be fairly easy though.
A thread over in technical matters got me thinking where one guy was quoted £122 for a BMW bearing. I suggested he went this route if he could.
Am I right?

We've got a local chap to me who has never let me down - you can take any old bearing in and within a few minutes he'll have worked out which bearing you need from within his stockroom and your on your way.

Hugo even without the number if you measure inner ,outer and depth,type of bearing ie roller or taper etc any bearing stockist worth his job would identify it

Most bearing factors will help you out, just try to get name and numbers off old bearings. If it is something odd then go to Midland Bearings in Kingswinford, they stock just about every bearing there is!

Indeed, they are very helpful. For a project I'm currently working on, they helped me source some high grade Titanium 3mm diameter ball bearings, with appropriate aerospace certification. I had tried many, many places beforehand!

Yep this is what my chap does - get's his micrometer out and takes a few readings then starts to cross reference in his big book.

Years ago I was repairing my old Zanussi washing machine,and I got in touch with the local washing machine repairman to supply me with a bearing.He wanted over £80!! I went down to my local bearing supplier who matched it to a Renault 5 front wheel bearing...12 quid.Lasted 4 years after that!!

Be careful just taking the number from the bearing. Sometimes, especially in the auto industry, they will use an outer race stamped with a standard number, but a different sized inner race. So you need to measure all the dimensions, and not rely on the numbers.

Yes, and some (eg Vauxhall) even have the ABS sensor built in! That's why an Astra rear wheel bearning can cost £250!
