Took my sister's beloved AMG C43 into the dealers today to buy a new one (now C32). Car is 1999, total spec inc electric heated seats leather cd etc. It has 30,000 miles and MB history. Expected around £17-18500 for it (it was £45000 in 1999). Best trade in price ... £13000 against a new Lexus worst ... £9750 against a new MB C32!! So much for brand loyalty. Tempted to write to MB UK to ask what they are playing at. Not even my old Hyundai Lantra depreciated like that!!

yes, SWMBO did £10k in 2 years on a C-class, car was a pile of junk so we lost both ways.

Parkers reckons on a trade price of £17480. There's not much in AutoTrader for less than that either.

I can't see it making much less than £15k at auction, and under £10,000 is an absolute joke.

But having seen a friend pay virtually new list for a 2 year old Corsa, I'll believe anything's possible and you can't blame car dealers for trying it on - as long as they negotiate upwards when you don't fall for it.

Rather than trade it in, I'd auction it if she can't stomach a private sale. Alternatively, try one of the specialist dealers that advertise in places like Autocar and the weekend motoring papers and see what they'd be prepared to give you. (To be honest, I wouldn't have the stomach for a private sale on a specialist car like this, unless there's a thriving owners' club - people just aren't willing to commit that kind of money to a 4 year old car without lots and lots of consumer protection laws!)

A lot obviously depends on mileage and condition. There are a lot of C-class around so I guess there is over-supply at the moment and only the very best find customers. There is place not far from me that has a lot of S,T,V high-mileage C-class and they don't seem to easily find buyers.

Good God, I hope she's not really going to buy another ! Once bitten, twice shy and all that.

Lexus are real keen to deal just now, they were chasing me to have a 24 hour test drive of a is200 today.Didn't know I'd shown an interest in one!
So it's interesting, but perhaps not surprising, to see such a big over valuation, than Merc dealer.
Depending on finances & if you've another car to use in the meantime, could the dealer you eventually choose for the new car, try to pre-sell the old one, before your finaly commiting to purchase?Would they display & advertise it for no/minimal cost?
Of course insurance & commonsense precations, prevailing!!

PS You might notice our yard rapidly reduce in size, soon we've sold most of it for housing.
Now what to do with all that £££££!

My MB depreciation was ok

Bought a new SLK 200 for 25,000 March 2001, with a 4,000 trade in for a car worth 3,000.

Sold it back to same dealer Feb 2003, 10,000 on clock for 19,000 cash. Tried selling privately but got no interest.

5,000 for 2 years of a quality motor, about the same as a car half the price.

That looks good to me. I lost £7k on a £10k car (was £17k new, bought at 3 years old) in just over 2 years and 20,000 miles.

I may buy a better marque like a MB in the future but could only run to a nearly new base C class I think. Couldn't buy a BMW because of their reputation. Or rather the characteristics of their owners.

How big is a C class anyway? Is it old Avensis or Mondeo size or bigger?

dodo - so the depreciation, plus insurance + road tax + petrol + service costs = or > approx £1000 per month = £30 average each and every day of the year.

Expensive way to travel!
Mercedes depreciation-WOW! - eMBe {P}
Or put another way, £30,000 depreciation for 30,000 ( = 10,000 miles a year). So depreciation on its own
= £1 per mile
= £10,000 a year

Yes and its costing a lot to let loose the dogs of war too...Will probably trade for new Lexus. Thanks for your help
