Nissan Micra K11 - Nissan Micra K11 no gears at all - Charlie_k11

Hi, I purchased my 2000 Micra K11 automatic, engine 998 s, 5dr few months ago. The car ha 80k mile but was rinning great. It passed MOT in Feb 2013.

The problem is that I now have no gears and the car behaves as it was in N. Engine starts with no problems and when selector is moved to R, D or L you can hear engine RPM change. When I cycle back from D to P I can hear slight grinding noise as if something was not locking properly. When the car is in D ( still not driving) and I press on the gas pedal the spedo is moving as if indicating that the car was driving. I changed transmission oil (3 L of Dex II) and still nothing. I performed the self diagnostic test to identify the fault and the first blink was the longest indicating that the vehicle speed sensor is short/disconnected. I checked connection of everything I could find on the gearbox and still not driving. I also read that the powder brushes may be the culprit but I could not locate them (they are not on the front of the gearbox next to the gearbox oil dipstick as it is shown in the Haynes K11 manual). I also tried to find the vehicle speed sensor on the internet but the only thingh I found for K11 is the ABS speed sensor and vehicle speed sensor for vehicles made after 2001/2002.

I seriously need some help since I cant even drive to the garage. Anything is appreaciated.

Thanks,

Charlie

The fact that the speedo is working tends to suggest that the differential output gears are turning. Are you sure you have not got a driveshaft problem or worn splines on the cv joints?

Would this cause not having wheels locked in Park gear selector position and the grinding when shifted fro D to P?

I must admit I am not a mechanic but with a bit of gudance I will taki it apart.

I failed to mention that there is a hissing sound in the front of the vehicle in the gearbox dipstick. It sounds like air escaping form a compressor.

I thing what elekie was trying to say was that as the spedo was working it looked like the differential that outputs to the two driveshafts was turning. So in theory one of your driveshafts should be turning, but may have sheared the splines or perhaps broken a cv joint. Get someone to sit in the car with reverse selected & their foot on the brake, engine ticking over. Look at the driveshafts from under the front of the car & see if one is turning.

Have you check both output drive shafts for rotation when in drive. It sounds like you have snapped a drive shaft or it has pulled out of the CV Joint. Regards Peter

you are right. after I read his post again I think I understand whet he suggested. I thought of trying this today. I will take a look at it and udate in few days. many thanks.

Going from D to P in these will cause a nasty noise from experience if the car is moving. If the gearbox internals are moving, the same will likely be true!

Hi,

Here is some update on the situation.

Since I had some issues on verifying if the drive shafts were faulty I called up few garages in York, UK. The most common diagnosis was "the gearbox is shut", followed by "there is a leak from the engine into the gearbox", then "the torque converter is the problem". I must say that few of the garages were auto transmission specialists. The last I called was Paul Garland garage and the guy immediately said that the drive shafts are the problem (just like many of you suggested). The car is at the garage now and the mechanic said that after they lifted it they saw the drive shafts pop out of the transmission. He also said that they looked newer and asked if they were replaced or reconditioned. I recently bought the car so I don’t know. He said he need to investigate why they came out (are they too short or too long or what). Can anyone suggest a reason why they came out?

It would be greatly appreciated.

Can anyone suggest a reason why they came out?

Think you answered that yourself. They are obviously the incorrect ones for the car.

Your car is an Auto, has someone fitted driveshafts from a manual perhaps?
