Honda Civic 1.8 March 2013 - Honda civic rear calipers sticking - may10

Hello,

Inspecting my civic at the Honda garage, it was discovered the rear caliper was sticking. I have seen threads about this topic and was wondered is it a known fault with Honda ? Apparently when they discover something the Honda garage where I take my car, they film it. When I asked to see the video the mechanic sheepishly said he had forgot to turn the video on. That may be true.

I suppose i should be thankful I was warned about parking on a deline and park it in gear.

I was aware the hanbrake has been acting erratically. I understand this is the result of the caliper sticking.

I bought Honda on the reputation of reliability, I am not too impressed at the moment.

I have done approx 61,000 miles over 4 years; do not brake excessively and quite a careful driver.on the whole.

I have just been quoted £435 for rear calipers and £120 for rear brake pads.

Can i fight this as a known defect and reduce the bill?

Grateful for any help. Thanks

£435 does seem a little excessive for a sticky calipper but the car has done over 60,000 miles otherwise fault free and while it's not unheard of on the Civic it's not exactly rife. Brake calippers operate in the most inhospitable environment so I don't think I'd be too upset after so many miles. It's more common on cars that don't see regular heavy braking as the majority of braking effort is done by the front discs with the rears only coming into effect during hard braking.

I've had to replace them on Mazda's quite regularly but the cost at non-franchise garages was a fraction of this. I'd shop around for a cheaper quote and ask your dealer to match or get close to it. I doubt you'd get any assistance from Honda with so many miles covered, you have to expect some running repairs on a car beyond 60,000 miles.

I have a CRV - Honda standard service is a squirt of brake snake oil.

I get my brakes fettled every 2 years - wheels off, pads out, pistons greased..........costs me 1 hour + parts (if any). Great investment as sticking pads can cost a lot to rectify - pads/disks if you are lucky, plus claipers if you are unlucky.

£50/£60 every 2 years for fettling is a lot cheaper than fitting new parts.

Honda handbrake is not usually disc based but a mini-drum brake - my old Civic & CRV experience - you can youtube Honda handbrake fettling & the videos are great.

What FB said, get someone with some nous on tap to do real maintenance jobs like this, cos they will not be done at the dealer.

Few, if any maker's dealers service brakes correctly, at one time it used to be a full brake strip clean inspect and lube up every other service (so at each major) with Toyota they certainly did the required work on our Hilux, that was around 2009, i no longer know if this is the case, hopefully someone could update this.

My daughter's Civics (2004 models) 2.0 litre type S, both of them the parking brake worked on the rear calipers, not sure what her 18 month old type R is like i haven't laid hands on it and to be honest have no wish to, if anything like the service its been getting from the local Honda dealer whatever system the rear brakes are its more than likely they won't have been touched, my son (her brother) had to take the car back in for her (she working away) because they left the brakes poorly bled (some recall work) and tried to fob him off that pumping the brakes to make them work was normal!, they know different now....his own Honda goes to another maind dealer which couldn't be more different.

As FB mentions, the drum inside disc design is a superior and much more expensive system, it rarely gives any bother at all.

Self adjusting rear callipers,

But that only works if the handbrake free play is correct.

And not if some joker has tightened up the free play usually to get it through an MOT.

my Jazz with rear discs has been perfect - touch wood - in five years.. No work on brakes at all...

That sounds like a recipe for them NOT to be perfect in the future, unless it really is a "maintenance free" design.

Contradiction waiting to happen?

Err.. My maintenance plan is to strip and clean and lubricate where appropriate..both front and rear..All still working perfectly after 5 years but I take your point:-)

Hello,

I really appreciate this first class advice which I know I won't receive from my local Honda. dealer. Will definitely arrange to get this maintenance job in hand. I plan to keep the car for at least another three or four years.

Thanks once again
