Mazda 2 - Recommendations for £5-7k reliable 5dr hatchback - MikeyLNG

My old 2002 Corsa has served me very well since I got it, but it's coming up to 140k on the clock, and I can't justify sinking more money in the service costs and such, so it's time to upgrade.

  • Budget is £5-7k (would be nice if i could find something closer to £5-6k)
  • Number 1 priority is reliability and cost of repair
  • 5dr required, but prefer it to be on the smaller side overall (think Golf)
  • I'd like it to feel responsive and nippy

I've been trying to put together a shortlist to have a look. Everywhere I've seen, Japanese makes are said to be one of the most reliable, so I've mainly been looking at those. I mentioned the Golf earlier, but I hear they're quite expensive to repair? I am open to non-Japanese cars if they're just as reliable/cheap to run.

So far I have the Mazda 2 and Honda Jazz on my list. The Honda Civic, I'm not too keen on the supposed poor rear view, and it does err on the larger side. The Jazz I honestly don't care if it's seen as an old person car if it's responsive and nippy then I'd be happy, but I hear the ride isn't the most comfortable?

Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

Having run an 8th generation Civic from 2007 to last year, and used it for professional driving instruction until 2009, forget the supposed restricted rear vision, it's more in the mind than in reality-you just get used to looking past the split rear window.

I'm not sure what you mean by "err on the larger side" It's not a car that feels "large".

You should go for another Corsa

the most reliable car in the vauxhall range, and good value for money.

stick to a petrol engine.

Looking for longterm reliability but you also want a dose of driver enjoyment for less than £6k? You already hit the nail right on the head without any help from us with the Mazda 2, it's a brilliant little car. Great fun to drive, bombproof rev happy normally asperated chain driven petrol engines and just enough room to be practical. One of the best superminis on the market. Shares the same floorpan and suspension as the excellent Fiesta but is better made and less likely to go wrong. £6k is plenty for a nice one.

The Jazz is robust and cheap to run but is God awful to drive. Never understood just how Honda got the dynamics so wrong. Utterly dull. The 1.2 is supposed to have 89bhp but it's all up the top end and feels nothing like it on the road. Wheezy with numb steering and crashy ride yet the handling is bland and in no way sporty in compensation. If you enjoy driving I really wouldn't.

The Civic is great but you're stepping back two generations to a pre 2012 model here which although robust and certainly lively in 1800 VTEC form it is dated and will cost far more to run than the Mazda 2.

Mazda 2 is an excellent suggestion, but my daughter had four Toyota Yarises in a row and we found them much more 'responsive and nippy' than the road testers make out. They were all 1.3s and you need to go for this engine, not the 1.0. Reliability, as with all petrol Toyotas, is excellent.

I would second the Japanese suggestions, or a Fiesta. As for the Corsa, we have a 2010 1.2 and it's nowhere near being in the same league as the other suggestions.
It feels built down to a price and I'd be surprised if it's as well built a car as the 2002 model being replaced. I know the Corsa is reputed to being reliable but every time we get a a fault a Google search throws up lots of instances. That's in part down to the sheer volume of cars but faults smack of poor engineering or materials. Such as wipers that slap the A pillar and cost a lot to repair, seats that collapse because the interior structure is just one grade up from coat hanger wire, handbrakes that needed a recall to keep the lever attached, jammed rear seat folding catches etc.
All compounded by 20k/annual service interval. No wonder the timing chains all rattle.

My wife was in a similar situation, in 2010. She chose a 2008 Mazda 2 1.3 TS2 5 door with 35,000 on the clock for £7495. She still has it and it's got 86,000 on the clock now. It's had routine servicing, a few tyres and one suspension arm in that time. It's peppy enough, she enjoys driving it and the interior is standing the test of time.

Any thoughts on Toyota Auris (no bigger than Golf) I've seen 2011 models at around £6000.

I'd have thought that the Kia Rio should make it on to the OP's short-list?

If you are talking Golf, then the Mazda2 is one class smaller.

Golf size you are looking at the Mazda3 - also a great car for driving and reliabiity. But if you don't need that much space there are many options in the Mazda2 size class as noted above.

Thanks all for the great suggestions. As an update, I had a test drive in both the Mazda 2 and 3. To be honest I'm leaning more towards the 3 now. I didn't find the 2 overly noisy, but I took some people with me who sat in the back, who said it was quite noisy there and somewhat cramped (but bearable). The 3 is obviously an entirely different class of car, but it just felt so much more refined in all aspects. Quieter, nicer interior, obviously more spacious. I don't particularly need the space at this moment in time, but my own initial impresion when getting into a 2 is "it is pretty compact in here", and I plan on keeping this car for a good 5+ years, so getting a slightly bigger car now would save the hassle of switching again in the near future.

Finding a 3 in this price range will take some luck though, so I will keep my options open.

From that I assume you're after a new model? You can get a decent first gen 3 from under a grand. I sold a solid example that was mechanically spot on with a years Mot for £650 recently. But the best facelifted examples are easily within your budget and although thirstier than the new model these are brilliant used buys below £7k.

There are Kia Ceed's on Autotrader with a year or two warranty left from £5000 - Hyundai i30's are almost identical (but 5 years unlimited mileage compared with Kia's 7 years/100,000 miles).
