Ford Mondeo Edge TDCI 125 2010 - Oil pressure light on, faulty radio & engine loss - Neil Dunroe

First post here and it's complicated- Sorry!

For a month or so, the radio has been switching itsel off and then back on at irregular intervals. Then passenger door will lock from the remote but will not unlock and you have to climb over from the driver's side to unlock it with the handle.

Then two days ago, the oil pressure warning light came on so I pulled over and put 1.5 litres of oil in (without checking the oil level first).

Tried to drive home on the motorway and started losing power. Light was still on. Managed to get off the motorway and drive rest of the way home in low gears. Engine sounded rough and rang the mechanic to look at it the next day.

He put it on the diagnostic machine but nothing showed up. He has changed the oil filter and ensured the right level of oil is there in case I had overfilled. I then drove it out of the garage and about 1 mile down the road it conked out. I called the mechanic who wants me to drop the key back to him to ook at it tomorrow. I have lost confidence in him as he doesn't seem to know what it could be.

I am wondering whether this is going to be really serious and if so whether to cut my losses and look to scrap the car. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated from you.

Might be wrong - but I'm afraid it does sound serious.

If you have had a genuine low oil level and pressure incident (not faulty light) and didn't stop quickly (and remained stopped!) and the engine is sounding rough and loosing power then probably turbo will be in trouble as well as crankshaft and camshaft bearings (all these need oil pressure to lubricate)

If this is the case it might be worth considering fitting a used engine/turbo

Hi Big John, thanks for your reply.

I had only topped up the oil in December so I don't think I had low oil level but yes there must have been a problem with the oil pressure. Although the car is only 2010 it has done a lot of mileage from the previous owner (around 175,000) so I'm not surprised that it is something serious.

Thanks for your comments. They are much appreciated.

Once the oil pressure warning light comes on, you are doing damage.

When you started losing power, I suspect it was because the engine was starting to seize.

The engine sounding rough was probably all the bearings rattling due to the damage you'd done.

I reckon it conked out because you seized the engine.

Hi bathtub tom, thank you for your comments.

It is amazing how much you learn after an incident!!!

The car has done high mileage for its 7 years of age so I think it may be better to scrap it rather than to try and sort it out especially as I am no mechanic!!

Thanks for your advice, though.

Its amazing that people do not know that the oil pressure warning light means STOP NOW.

I have been driving for over 40 years now and that one warning light has exactly the same meaning now as then.

The clue is in the name i.e. WARNING LIGHT.

Its a bit like stopping at a red traffic light.

Hi skidpan,

I have been driving for 30 years and never had to deal with this warning light before. I thought putting oil in would solve the problem. Now I know that is not the case.
