Citroen C4 BlueHDi100 - Potential power steering fault - ciaran1602

Hi all,

I just wanted to drop a post in the forum for a bit of assistance. I have recently bought a C4 BlueHDI100 new from a Citroen dealer simply because it was well equipped, comfortable and had exceedingly cheap finance after all the discounts (what can I say, cheapskate). After having a Peugeot, Citroen and Renault before I've never really had problems. The car has covered 2200 miles in about 1.5 months from new.

I have noticed in my last trip to the midlands, the steering feeling abnormally heavy. It doesn't feel like the car is actively fighting me it simply feels a fair bit heavier than it did when I bought it. Upon further testing, Intermittently the steering fails to self center when taking a corner, instead the steering "locks" to whatever lock I needed to navigate the bend. It only begins to center itself around the dead ahead.

It's also intermittently behaving the same in reverse, often allowing me to move backward at some speed with no corrective input at all.

Originally I thought this was a puncture or flat tyre or some such but I'm increasingly concerned there is a power steering fault. Citroen themselves have put the car on a diagnostic machine and taken a cursory 2 minute hop up the road and back finding no fault. They have offered to take the car in for a few days and take it on a few extended test drives; is this worth it?

Would I seem to be making mountains out of molehills?

If the steering feels heavy then it would suggest a problem with the power steering depending on how it behaves is depending on weather it's electric or mechanical power steering. With Mechanical power steering once you have a problem it's obvious but electrical it can be intermittent I would let the dealer try to find it because if there's a drivability fault then they should fix it if you have not had it for too long. (Obviously your power steering is electric)

THanks Philip.

The dealership have begrudgingly agreed to take it back in for a longer test drive and give me a courtesy car. It's begun to very gently pull to the left now for whatever reason and the weighting is getting ever more inconsistent. Either way doesn't feel a bit like the car I bought!

Citroen C4 BlueHDi100 - Potential power steering fault - Fiesta-Ranger

Recently had a power steering fault on a Ford Fiesta. Heavy steering usually means the power steering/transmission fluid is low in the reservoir. Check manual where it is situated around engine compartment. The level should be between two marked guages on the outside, min & max. Work collegue reported to me an unusual rainbow slick was comming from my Fiesta. It was raining and had great difficulty identifying it. Yes..transmission fluid gives a rainbow effect with no colour. When the Fiesta was raised in the garage, the seals of power steering sensor were starting to give way. £32 and only via Ford. No 3rd party I'm afraid, if it turns out your power steering sensor is leaking. 30 minutes labour, due to having to take other parts off to get to it. Hope this helps a little.
