What cheap 4x4 is good off-road?

I do a bit of shooting and would like to buy a cheap 4x4 to enable me to carry my kit into fields and woods. This could involve a mile or more up tracks with ruts and deep mud so I want something capable. Road use isn’t too important as I have another car and, as I would only do maybe 3000 miles a year, fuel and running costs wouldn’t be important either. I have looked to see what I could get for £1000-2000 and thought maybe a Suzuki Jimny might do as they have a low range/diff lock and are said to be fairly good off road. Can you suggest anything else that might do?

The Jimny is phenomenal off road because of the light weight and proper full 4WD system. They are horrible on the road. Worth trying to find a Nissan Terrano II that hasn't been destroyed or rusted itself into oblivion. They are very Land Rover Defender-like, but a bit more civilised. The Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin was also surprisingly good off road: www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/mitsubishi/shogun-pi.../
