Is the Volvo V40 the same as the Ford Focus underneath?

My local MOT tester has described my Volvo V40 as a Ford Focus. Is this correct? I rented a Focus on holiday last year and thought it was very different in terms of drive.

They are basically the same car. Same engines, same powertrains, same suspension. So were some of the previous two generations of Mazda 3. Small differences in spring and damper rates and in wheels and tyres can make them feel significantly different, but they all handle well. Definitely chalk and cheese compared to the current Nissan Note that simply isn't anything to write home about, but is significantly cheaper than a V40.
