Replacing an old Golf GTI?

I've had an R reg Golf GTI 16V for the last 8 years and have loved it but think its time to replace it with something a bit newer.

Am looking to get something 3-4 years old probably, and have been looking at newer Golfs.

Would appreciate advice on which are viewed as the best models, trims etc and what other similar options there are of other makes, as conscious that as I've owned Golfs for over 10 years I am probably a bit biased. Budget is £10,000.

SEAT Leons and Skoda Octavias with the same drivetrains are better value but lack the prestige. These cars have not been without faults. You'll find out what to look for in the Golf Mk IV, Mk V and Mk VI entries in www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar I would try to buy one with the later post 2009 chain can 2.0TFSI engine.

I am interested which is the best on motorway cruise - Primera P12, Golf VI or BMW 3 Series. I think that most of the diesels should be refined pretty much, except maybe that old 2.2 Di from Nissan.
