Metallic noise when pulling away

When I pull away from stationary in 1st then in to 2nd (worse when cold) there is a harsh metallic noise coming from the nearside of the car. There are noticeable vibrations coming up through the clutch pedal. The gearchange action is fine though. The car has an IB5 gearbox. Can you shed any light on the problem?

Reads like a driveshaft problem.
