I covered 200,000 miles on my car in the last ten years. Should I buy another diesel now?

Having had my 2004 SEAT Leon Cupra diesel for over 10 years and hitting just under 200,000 miles, I find myself at the stage where the engine requires replacing. It's beyond economic repair so I need to buy a new car. I'm looking to purchase something similar - another SEAT Leon, Audi A3, Volkswagen Golf or Skoda Octavia VRS Estate. Is there any reason I shouldn't go for a diesel? I have a budget of around £10,000-£12,000 and I cannot see an argument for buying a petrol over a diesel right now, but I am wary of spending that amount of money on a diesel car only to be hit by increased running costs from the government as they look to promote EVs. Is there any reason not to go down this route? Thank you.

Diesels still make a lot of sense if you cover a lot of miles. As you've covered 200k in 10 years, it sounds like a diesel would be perfect for your needs. We'd recommend a petrol or hybrid vehicle if you live in a city centre or cover a lot of short journeys but, if you regularly cover long motorway trips, go for a diesel.
