Can I fit tyres with different treads to my car?

I recently asked a tyre company to replace a tyre on my Audi A3. I asked for a direct replacement but noticed on arrival home that it's a different tyre tread pattern from the other front tyre. The tyre firm said it did not make any difference. Are they correct?

We recommend that the same tyres are fitted on all wheels. But it that's not possible, mixing is okay only if the tread patterns are the same across the same axle. That means fitting a pair of identical tyres on the rear axle or a pair of identical tyres to the front. You really shouldn't use two different tread patterns across the same axle as it can be dangerous.
