As has been said on this site about a hundred times-

You MUST use an oil with the spec on the bottle of 505.01 for 10,000 mile oil changes.
For extended oil changes you MUST use spec 506.01 or the latest spec 507.
These oils are quite expensive, but if you don't use the correct oil the engine will go kaput (something to do with cam lobes)

If some clever guy tells you to use ordinary 10W/40, don't.

SO IT IS 505.01, 506.01, or 507, nothing else!!!

I've got a Passat 130 TDI and I love it, brilliant car, good luck with it.

507.00 not 507

Sorry to be so pedantic, but shortening these specification codes spells instant confusion - for example, 505.00 is very different from 505.01 and its use would wreck a PD engine.

Dear old VAG - what numpty released engineering specification numbers on the Public and expected it to work? If they had just called the oils "PD oil" and PD Longlife" and put a big sticker to this effect on top of the engine, there would have been less of a problem.

The PD 130 is a brilliant engine - look after it; you won't get another diesel as good as this now, thanks to the Eurocrats.

659.

You are correct 659FBE, I am sorry for this mistake.

BUT, I don't think that there are any other 507 grades, so this is my excuse!

I agree with you re the PD Longlife point, it would be much better, although the Castrol Edge 5W-30 has got "for Audi/VW PDI" on the can.

My wife has a new VW Golf TDI Match, which after 1000 miles has not gone wrong yet, and you have to search in the thick handbook for information about oils. IMO it is not good enough, there should be a large sticker in the engine bay informing you which oils to use. I am sure there must be many owners who mistakenly put the wrong oil in.

Halfords do an own-brand PD oil that meets 505.01 at £9 per litre (it's Castrol Edge 5W40 PD oil repackaged, basically).

G.S.F do a fully synthetic oil (made by FUCHS OIL) for £15 + vat. for 5 litres. the guy there assured me that VW fill the new engines with it at the factory.

It says, quite clearly, against that oil at £15.40 is NOT, repeat NOT for PD engines. It shows how you should not listen to people who don't know what they are doing.

If you are giving someone advice you ought to get it right.

sorry, i was buying it for a petrol engine. still a good buy though!

after having my wrist slapped, did a bit of research on the FUCHS website they recommend FUCHS titan supersyn plus 5w-40. at£27.99 inc. for vw pd engines.
wot oil for tdi pd engine - quizman
Yes, maltrap, that's the one for 10,000 mile changes, 505.01.
It's about as cheap as you can get for PD engines. I use Castrol Edge 5W-30 which is 507.00 at around £40 for 4 litres..

It's very complicated, isn't it?

I am getting totally confused by this. I have a Passat 130 TDI. Will Castrol Longlife 111 be ok to use on my diesal Passat? It on longlife service. But due to conflicting answers I have received from VW and the dealers I think I will go back to the 10000 mile service. I give up.
wot oil for tdi pd engine - quizman
Yes Castrol Longlife 111 is OK for your car, it will have on the can 506.01 or 507.00. I think it has been superceeded by Castrol Edge 5W-30 which is 507.00.
What are the dealers telling you? When I bought mine the dealer hadn't a clue which oil to use.
Don't give up, it will all become clear!

quizman,

One dealer is telling me to use longlife 2 which if I am correct is the 5W-30 and another is telling me to use longlife 3 which I think is 0W-30 or 20. I suppose technically both of them are right. But I am still confused about all of this. Both are expensive to buy all the same.

I am hoping to keep the car for at least another 3 to 4 years and as I am on the longlife service at the moment I want to make sure it is getting the right oil.

Its not that confusing. 507.00 covers all the other grades retrospectively, so just get an oil that is certified to meet 507.00. Certified, not "recommended for", "meets", might do, or nearly the same! The use of 507.00 is explained here: www.volkswagen.co.uk/assets/common/content/owners/...f

HI! I Buy my PD Oil From a seat garage and it's a damm site cheaper than all these others have used over the years! the oil is called quantum and it says on the 'tin' that it is a VW oil and good for PD Engines- maybe worth a look? Seat being VAG and all!
wot oil for tdi pd engine - quizman
bhoy wonder, both oils are OK to use in your Passat PDI130.

The older oil is 0W-30 and has 506.01 on the can.
The latest oil is 5W-30 and has 507.00 on the can. This was brought out for the new range of Passats, with a particulate filter, and is also recommended for all PD engines, old or new.

Yes the PD oils are expensive, but you only need 4 litres, they last a long time, they are fuel efficient and you know you are using the correct stuff.

Most of the oil companies make an oil for PD engines, Castrol Edge 5W-30, Shell, Mobil,Fuchs and many more.

Just make sure it says 505.01, 506.01 or 507.00 and NOT 505.00 especially, as most oils have this spec. My local garage told me 505.00 was only .01 different so it would be OK, I took my own oil for them to put in.

Don't listen to garages, they like to use what they have already got!

My car is still going strong after 7 years ownership using the correct oil!!!

quizman,

Thanks. You have told me exactly what I wanted to know.

He's only half right, and therefore 100% wrong!

The bit about VW using Fuchs oil at the factory is correct, and most Fuchs oils carry at least one VW approval. Unfortunately, VW approval does not mean it's suitable for ALL VW engines, and the PD engine has very specific requirements. You need 505.01 or 507.00 on the can somewhere.

As far as I am aware, based on research for my father in law recently, there are only two Fuchs oils suitable for a PD engine:

SuperSyn Plus 5W/40 (505.01) - for fixed service intervals
Titan GT1 Longlife (507.00) - for longlife service intervals

Confusingly, there are several oils with SuperSyn and GT1 labelling which are not suitable. It must say SuperSyn PLUS or Titan GT1 LONGLIFE.

I recommended Quantum in the end. 505.01 approved, sold by VW dealers and a lot of motor factors, and very reasonably priced.

Cheers
DP
