  • Land Rover Defender (1946 - ) - Anybody ever washed a paper air filter? 30 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Rinse in washing solution for 5 minutes, rinse in clean water till no further dirt emerges, shake out water and dry at max 60 degC. This can be done a maximum of three times thus extending the change interval to 40,000 miles or 2 years (which ever comes first). "NOTE: Air filter elements without perforated metal covering are not to be cleaned, these must always be replaced."
  • Astra diesel problem 28 Jul 2006 (Forum)
This is not an uncommon problem on these models, but to try to cure it I've changed the injectors twice, fuel injector pipes, engine mountings, cleaned the EGR valve many times and blocked it off, cleaned the inlet manifold thoroughly, adjusted the fuel screw on the pump (½ turn max, and every subsequent adjustment has been within that ½ turn), used Millers fuel additive, checked and double checked pump timing with a dial gauge (0.8mm ± 0.1mm BTDC), and I still can't cure it.
  • Uni Run - observations 21 Dec 2005 (Forum)
As time was not an issue, I did an 'experiment' on speed against fuel consumption. Using the tip computer I monitored consumption over 2 30 mile m/way stretches. one at max 60 mph and the other at 'normal' speed. The difference was surprising. At 60 Mph the average was 41 MPG -- not bad for a big loaded V6 petrol auto estate. At normal speed the average fell to 29 mpg --- 12 mpg less and a huge endorsement for the 'reduce speed limits to save fuel' lobbys.
  • Towing as part of the running-in process 3 Jul 2003 (Forum)
The 'van will be around 1100kgs laden (C5 limit @1400) and the car will be 3-up but not heavily laden, nowhere near max train weight that's for sure. Is this a complete "no-no" ? There are a couple of used examples in the region with 3k miles on which could be a better bet (but not necessarily any cheaper!). Depends who, and how, the 3k miles was done I suppose....
  • MPG wanted for 4-6k. 29 Jun 2002 (Forum)
I have a 2001 Y plate Corsa SXI (new shape) with 20000 miles on the clock, bought new because it came with free insurance, I'm only 23! However, now i've got max no claims I want to upgrade into a larger car, but I also want better economy than what I'm getting with the Corsa - about 40 - 43mpg usually.I've just graduated and my job will involve commuting up to 50miles a day on motorway so figure in 20000 miles per year total.
  • Vectra 2.0Di To Dip Or Not To Dip. 22 Feb 2002 (Forum)
I drove the car from the garage this morning, arrived at work about 9am then dipped it at lunch (1:30pm). The oil level was covering the entire plastic level- way above max. I've phoned the garage and they said the engine oil should be checked about 15mins after stopping the engine which in this case would probably give a low, artificially low in my opinion, reading of the engine oil level.
