  I recently owned a 2002 BMW E39 530d which I bought from new, covered 172000 largely trouble free miles and sold it in excellent condition. I changed the oil every 6-7000 miles.  I have replaced it with a new 2015 5series F10 535d with 50,000 mile service pack but the first oil chage is not due until 21,000 miles. I recently took it in to the local BMW dealer for an additional oil change at 10,000 miles. When booking I was told that an additional oil change was not necessary and that I was wasting my money, but after I insisted they agreed to do the work for an estimated £182.

  As I am now in the position of needing to purchase another car, and as someone who is not particularly knowledgeable about cars in general , I would very much appreciate any advice or comments in relation to the following: Are there any particular models of cars that you would recommend that are cheap, safe and fuel efficienct? I am of course open to buying another Ford Focus, but it would be helpful to broaden my search. Is there a maximum age  for these second hand cars, above which as a general rule they would be best left alone? For example, I have seen a 2007 Ford Mondeo with 100k miles on sale for in the region of 2k, but it struck me that this could be simply too old.
