My 2001 Ford Focus hesitates under acceleration. I've replaced the MAF sensor but what else could it be?

I bought a 2001 Ford Focus 1.6 LX just over two weeks ago. When purchased it had a fault which the RAC diagnosed as a faulty MAF sensor. Since then this has been replaced, but the car is still not driving correctly. The main problems are a lack of acceleration when pulling away or standing in traffic, when it sometimes just cuts out. Both the rev counter and speedo dials are erratic, which can also affect the radio volume control. Today whilst cruising at 50mph, the power went, then I heard two loud bangs (like backfires) then it picked up again.

As well as the MAF sensor I have spent over £260 on a new coil pack and plug leads which are genuine Ford parts. It seemed to run better for the first day, then going back to how the car ran before. I'm at a loss.

Possibly the speed sensor on the final drive. This develops an oil leak and affects all associated components. Costs about £100 to replace.
