Hi All, I have a 97 1.9 Diseal polo whose brake lights have failed I have checked the bulbs and fuses but both seem to be ok - Any ideas on what else it could be? Also the engine starts fine from cold but won't restart when hot - i had the starter motor replaced in Feb and the car normally restarts fine when it has cooled down a bit but im baffled?! -
Mitsubishi Grandis MPV (2004 - ) - 2005 2.4 auto - How to upgrade the brakes 30 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Car - Mitsubishi Grandis 2.4 Auto 2005, running on Warrior Alloy wheels - another question. Love the car in many ways, but have never been happy about the brakes, they just don't feel powerful enough for the size and weight of car. At times especially in wet I feel they could not be depended on if needed in an emergency. Can they be upgraded? bigger disks? -
Nissan Primera III (1999 - 2002) - No shim on one back brake pad 12 Sep 2007 (Forum)
A quick internet search refers to the shims as anti-rattle or squeal. I am therefore hoping the car is safe to drive? 80 mile round trip tomorrow. They are Lucas brakes on a 2.0 Xreg if that makes any difference? -
New tyres - why put them on the back? 23 Aug 2007 (Forum)
It seems to me (as a complete non-expert) that the new ones should go on the front: better grip under braking, more tread to clear water in the rain and clear a path for the rears, and if you rotate them at half-life, then probably more even wear. Plus aren´t the rear brakes only used during extreme braking? -
Faulty ABS - MOT failure? 6 Jun 2007 (Forum)
The dealer said it would need new sensors and new drive shafts leading to a whopping £700 bill. Since normal braking is fine, I don't want to fix it. But is it going to fail in MOT? There is a single red warning light on dash showing [(!)(P)BRAKE] altogether. As soon as parking brake is released the light goes off. -

It's a mystery! (206CC Brake reserv.) 21 Mar 2007 (Forum)
My Colleague's 02 206 CC suffered a loss of brake fluid last week. Took it to Peugeot, who were surprised to find the fluid reservior had a split in it. They claim they've never seen this happen on a 206 before. (Wasn't too expensive to repair c. £40) The Servo was replaced a month ago, and she has been driving over rough ground recently. -
Golf Brake Discs (again) 15 Dec 2006 (Forum)
I took my car for it's MOT today at a non-VW independant garage and it failed again (see last year) because the front brake disks were 'excessively pitted' (the rears were OK). I decided to have them replaced but I have kept the old discs. On inspection both discs have got corrosion on the inside only, on about 50% of the usable disc. -
Inner disc damage - 1997 Mondeo 2 Jan 2006 (Forum)
When i stripped them down to replace the pads i cleaned the 2 fescilized stubs and lighted greased them with LM grease, could this be stopping/hindering the reactive action of the outer pads?? Car is a 97 Mondeo, brakes lock up well, and pulls up in a straight line with no obvious brake mismatch. -
Ford fiesta brake disc stuck!! 19 Dec 2005 (Forum)
I have an N-reg mk3 fiesta and am in the middle of changing the front discs and pads. I've jacked up the car, taken off the wheels, but one of the brake discs is completely stuck to the hub! After many attempts to gently persuade it off i resorted to a bit of brute force with a mallet but all to no avail, the thing just won't come off. I suspect the car has been in an accident previous to me owning it and that there are still parts of the car that are just a bit bent out of shape. -
give way? 21 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Like many here i have been driving a few years now and was wondering at what time did filtering onto dual carrageways and motorways involve forcing motorists already on said roads to brake or swerve across instead of giving way and filtering on when safe to do so?. Now when you approach a slip and you have traffic on your right you have to watch the cars comming down the slip to see if they are going to watch your speed and then go faster than you so they can pull in front, or are they going to pull out anyway making you brake,or are they going speed up to 70, see that there is nowhere for you to go and then brake hard and wait on the slip. -
Brake problem. Rover 414i. 22 May 2005 (Forum)
All going well until I had to push the cylinder back into the caliper to take up the thickness of the new pads. I unscrewed the brake fluid top, as I squeezed the cylinder with a G clap it pushed in fine but fluid started to leek from around the cylinder seal. To me this means the seal needs replacing before the car can be driven. -
'95 306 1.8 SR Sedan brake bleed nipples 30 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Greetings, All. I would like to change the brake fluid on SWMBO's ten year old, very neat and tidy, 31k mile 306 1.8 SR Sedan. The fluid has never before been changed in the car's life, and I'm concerned about shearing bleed nipples like I did Donkey's years ago on my MG Metro when the car was only three years old. -
4X4 Braking Distances 5 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Did anyone read the Ferrari Special edition of Autocar? There is an interesting bit in the letters page about braking distances. The Porsche Carrera GT on road tyres with ceramic composite discs and eight piston calipers did 70-0mph in 52.1m with a kerbweight of 1472kg. The Land Rover Discovery TDV6 HSE on dual purpose tyres did 70-0mph in 51.2m with a kerbweight of 2718kg. -
Changing Brake Discs/Pads. Rover 416 12 May 2004 (Forum)
I have a Rover 416 auto (1997) and have a rubbing sound coming from the front wheels when braking....Im pretty sure its worn pads and maybe discs...Ive only ever changed pads on older cars and was wondering if its a difficult job to do for a relative novice in car maintenance, as this car has ABS etc, and I dont want to damage this and have no experience with it at all. -
Revenge to the Motorist 25 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Don't know if its exactly true, but still a good story that makes me smile. A friend of a friend took their car into the local, well known, "fast - fit" place for a free brake safety check. All the brakes were fine but they were advised that all their shock absorbers were in a dangerous way and this could seriously affect their steering etc under heavy braking. If thats the case, they said, you better change them over. -
Noisy golf rear brakes 4 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Recently, the rear brakes (pads\discs) on my Mk2 golf gti have started making an odd grinding nosie. Initially, I thought it was the rear caliper seizing up & causing binding, but having jacked up both wheels the bot spun freely. -

Yaris 2002 - Fishing out a dropped bulb in rear cluster 20 Apr 2014 (Forum)
Changing the rear brake bulb today, the bulb dropped down into the innards of the brake cluster. Tried to fish it out using a magnetic pickup tool, but the bulbs aren't magnetic! Any ideas before I dismantle the whole cluster?
