  Bids on the 83k mile 2003/53 XJ 3.0 V6 auto with leather in the photo started at a low £15,000 and ran out at £16,900, so if comes back again you know roughly what you will have to pay for it. BMWs generally looked to be a bit up and down. Diesels were up, with £9,900 bid for an 80k mile 03 reg 320dES. A 20k mile 2004/54 120dSE Steptronic with leather (the first I’ve seen at auction) sold for £16,250.

  But a top bid of £34,200 was the lowest I’ve ever seen for a latest spec 21k mile 04 model BMW X5 3.0d Sport with all the toys including leather, satnav and side steps. £20,200 wasn’t a lot either, for a 54k mile 03 reg Mercedes CLK 270CDI (the coupe with the diesel engine). Nor was £22,300 for a 22k mile 03 reg VW Touareg 3.2V6 Tiptronic with leather and plenty more kit.

Yet in contrast to a 46k mile 2001/51 Previa D4-D GLS 7-seater which sold for £13,100 on Wednesday, today’s 30k mile 2002/52 Previa D4-D CDX started at £13k yet went on to sell for £17,500.

  Today was a bit better for traders and private buyers alike. Someone bought the 2001/51 facelift BMW 330dSE Touring auto in the photo for just £5,450. True it has been damaged and repaired, the autobox was playing up and, since it had been a police car, only a fool would attempt to clock it.

Less sensible was £4,250 paid for a 92k mile Y reg Picasso HDI, £16,900 paid for a 9k mile 2003/53 reg Jaguar X-Type 2.0D SE, £4,150 paid for an 11k mile 02 reg Yaris 1.0GS, £5,700 paid for a 37k mile 02 reg Focus 1.6LX, and £12,850 paid for a 62k mile 2001/51 Audi S3.

A 49k mile Y reg 520iSE 2.2 auto with leather sold for £10,900, a 29k mile Y reg 525iSE manual bid to £9,200, but the bargain was a 43k mile 2001/51 reg 520i 2.2 manual which sold for £8,750.

And it was a big day for BMWs. A 69k mile 99T 323iSE auto sold for £7,450. A 60k mile 2001Y 318iSE sold for £9,150. A 40k mile 2000X 330d SE Touring auto bid to £13,800. A 7k mile 2003/53 316iSE auto bid to £14,600.

A 20k mile 02 reg BMW 525d reached £17,250 and a 34k mile 2002/52 reg Passat TDI PD SE estate got to £12,800, but neither sold. While a 17k mile 2001/51 manual Mercedes C220 CDI Sport Coupe sold for a serious £17,750.

  So no premiums there. Another new car, though nothing like as hard to get, was a 14k mile 2002/52 reg BMW 735i, strangely enough in the Renault Finance Overlease section. That bid to a cautious £35,500 provisional. Otherwise, there were the usual ups and downs. A brave new shape 2002/52 Megane 1.4 Dynamique 5-door with 9k miles sold for a serious £8,400.

  Today’s cheap cheapies included a 14k mile 2001/51 MG ZT190 (that’s the Rover 75 MG), sold for £11,500; a 64k mile 97R Jeep Cherokee Sport 2.5TD manual, sold for £5,450; a 96k mile 98S Rover 820Si, sold for £2,000; a 124k mile 92K BMW 520i auto, bid to £1,500; a 115k unwarranted 97R Peugeot 406 3.0GLX V6, sold for £1,325; a 78k mile 95M SEAT Cordoba 1.6CLX, sold for £1,200; and a 123k mile 96P Rover 420Sli bid to just £925.

  Another, this time a 40k mile 2000V in much less sought-after solid red, bid to £9,300. A big batch of Rover 75s was quite instructive, too. They were all 2000W reg BMW Oxford built cars with black sills, and prices varied enormously according to colour, engine and spec. Dearest by a long way was a 40k mile Connoisseur diesel in Tahiti Blue which someone wanted so much they paid £9,800.

  The French carmaker records an average repair bill of £330.23 with Ford, Vauxhall, Peugeot and VW costing a collective average of £248.03 per visit. BMW bucks the trend of the executive car segment with a below market average claim of £253. Mercedes-Benz cost £324.34. McClure-Fisher warns: "Consumers rarely factor the cost of repair bills when they look for a new car.
