  • Drinking & Driving ... 27 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Living in a land where D&D is a commonplace event (yes, even I'm over the limit on occasions) I'll throw in my tuppence worth... I'm sorry that the young man got nicked, but hopefully he will now be a better driver because of it, and will NEVER DO IT AGAIN! I wonder how many serial d&d'ers, who never get caught, end up killing folk, whereas the short, sharp shock would stop then doing so for ever.
  • Safety systems dull reaction times 22 Jan 2006 (Forum)
A study at Brunel University looked at the effects of two systems: adaptive cruise control (ACC), which electronically maintains a safe distance from the car in front, and active steering (AS), which monitors the white lines in the road and adjusts the steering to keep the car in lane. Researchers tested 44 drivers in a simulator to see how quickly they would respond to an emergency. When both safety systems were switched on, their reaction times were considerably slower. “If a driver has little to do the capacity to respond to unexpected events is dramatically reduced,” said Mark Young, who led the research.
  • Don't judge a..... 27 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Further to recent conversations, just explaining my way of thinking really, and something that set it off. On discussing whether old or young drivers are the worst, my train of thought was how awful it is to generalise, and to put people in little boxes Young - all boy racers with no manners (not true) Elderly - all doddering (with no manners or thought for anyone else either) - not true You never know, one of those old geezers could be a former racing driver (even I know it's not all formula 1)etc. etc
  • Woman passes driving theory test at 950th attempt 6 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Cha Sa-soon, 68, passed with a score of 60 on Wednesday, said Choi Young-chul, a police official at the drivers' license agency in Jeonju, 130 miles south of Seoul. Now she must pass a driving test before getting her license, Mr Choi said. Mrs Cha She told the Korea Times newspaper she needed the license for her vegetable-selling business.
  • Enraged Older Driver 13 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Headline news here today - Gentleman was leaving a supermarket and was approached by 4 young thugs who demanded his groceries, wallet, and car keys....
  • Intermittant fault - one dead 15 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Earlier in the year I mentioned a young girl speeding down a hill in the icy weather and being unable to negotiate the bend. In Scotland most drivers understand the problems of icy conditions. She hit a car killing the front seat passenger - fortunately the 3 children of the driver were not in the car she hit or the carnage could have been even worse.
  • Pointless U-turns 26 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Taxi and minicab drivers are especially likely to do this, although they usually do it with a fair amount of despatch. But what on earth induces silly young women and silly old men to do it clumsily and slowly? Sheer idiocy, seems to me.
  • Any - Black Box (Telematics) Insurance 12 Apr 2018 (Forum)
The Co-Op will cancel the insurance if you perpetually stray from the sensible and that to me at least, sounds like a good idea for young drivers. May not be cool, but neither is standing at a bus stop.
  • Dazzling fog lights cause 300,000 accidents 31 Jan 2012 (Forum)
A highly creative "report" by that bastion of the insurance industry, Swiftcover, surveyed 1600 motorists and came to this staggering conclusion. Who do they blame? Young drivers of course. I have yet to encounter any modern car with fog lights that dazzle me, day or night. However many DRLs - in particular the led types fitted to the latest high end Mercedes I find painfully bright and dazzling and some DRLs seem to stay on even when the headlights are turned on.
  • New use for speed cameras 27 Apr 2007 (Forum)
It is interesting to note that the age group for excess speed is 19 to 25 years old - a very similar age group to young drivers who do silly things in cars without regard to other road users. -- Roger I read frequently, but only post when I have something useful to say.
  • Strange French Custom 2 Jul 2001 (Forum)
Do any other nationalities do this? Incidentally, I lived in France for a while and the vast majority of drivers did this, young and old (and front seat passengers), so it's not based on the habits of one or two people. I've never seen a Brit do it. Can anyone enlighten me?
  • Blame the parents / children 14 Sep 2009 (Forum)
In recent months there have been many court cases involving death on the road in the force area - usually young drivers and speeding.
  • Look out ..... it's white-van-woman! 5 Dec 2007 (Forum)
I didn't like the look of this and thought it was a good time to pull into the next lay-by and eat my chewy bar. Yesterday, the delightful young lady from over the road - who happens to drive a white van - came over for a natter as I hosed the piles of mud from the old Mondy (I had been working in the Cambridgeshire fens). I related the story about the van driver who I had seen - apparently steering with her elbows - and was told, in all seriousness that steering with your elbows is a common practice in Transits - it's easy.

  • Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 01-12-2018 Part 1 5 Dec 2018 (Forum)
She'll have no instinct to brake with her right while having to engage the clutch, let alone which foot to use to brake in an emergency. A young driver should not left foot brake until manual cars are so rare as to be irrelevant (which will happen at some point) Older drivers, I agree, can benefit from left foot braking as long as they never drive a manual.
  • Essex Lorry Driver 20 Jan 2002 (Forum)
On Friday a Lorry driver(Paul Couldridge) was sentenced to 2 terms of 8 years(to run concurrently) for causing Death by dangerous driving. He fell asleep, crossed the central reservation, and killed a young couple. It is difficult not to compare this case with Gary Hart(who I see is to appeal).
  • Wedding Bells - idiot local driver! 23 Dec 2008 (Forum)
"While the bride and groom were tying the knot, the driver decided to take the car for a spin," she said in a statement on Wednesday. "Travelling at such great speeds in a busy residential area is reckless in the extreme and seems to indicate that this young man has no respect for other road users or even for someone else's property, because he was driving a hired vehicle."

  • Suzuki Baleno - Thoughts on Suzuki Baleno 21 May 2024 (Forum)
I would like to keep the car for a few years, the extra space whilst still being a small class of car is appealing as I'm a young driver and would like to keep the insurance premiums down. I suppose my question is, has anyone had any experience with the Baleno, namely negative ones? Or perhaps should I be looking elsewhere, such as the Dacia Sandero?
