  I,m about to change the rear brake discs on a 51 Reg 1.6 L Polo. Does the hub nut have to be removed, or does the disc alone come off the same as the front ?

  Most makers seem to put front calipers ahead of the axle, but some place them behind: there must be a difference in the direction of the forces acting on the caliper (and thus suspension) when brakes are applied, does this have significant effects or is position purely a matter of convenience for servicing?

  Hi Again, same Pug 406 estate "W" plate with occasional judder when braking. It feels like an overactive ABS, but its not skidding, or Icy. has anyone else experienced this, and what was the prognosis and cure, many thanks once again

  When I had the car tested today the mechanic said the front service brake had an imbalance of 25% which was on the legal limit. Can anyone tell me what this means, what causes it, how it affects the car and how you correct it. Thanks.

  A rather trivial question but one that sparked my curiousity; Why is it that when a vehicle is fitted with disc brakes all-round the front calipers are usually located at the "3 o'clock" position and the rear calipers at the "9 o'clock" position? Chad.

  A friend of mine owns a 98 renault laguna. The haynes manual says that to change the brake fluid i need a special renault diagnostic tool. Is it not possible to use a pressure bleeder or more traditional methods, or do i need to go to the renault dealer?

  What happens if and when she steps back into a manual a few years later? She'll have no instinct to brake with her right while having to engage the clutch, let alone which foot to use to brake in an emergency. A young driver should not left foot brake until manual cars are so rare as to be irrelevant (which will happen at some point) Older drivers, I agree, can benefit from left foot braking as long as they never drive a manual.

  Hi My son has had an ongoing issue with his brakes on his Ka. He had his brake pads replaced and the guy (mechanic friend) changing them said one of his discs had worn so changed that as well. A week later he took it to Kwik Fit to fit a new back box on the exhaust and they said the n/s front wheel was red hot, he took it to another garage as he couldn't get hold of his mate, (and still can't), they had it a week and they changed the calipers and master cylinder but the brakes were still binding, they didn't know what else to do so gave it back to him with the brakes still binding and suggested he go to a Ford dealer who might be able to help but he is reluctant to do that as the costs are now mounting and cant really afford the charges.

  Last week my trusted independent replaced my (83000 mile) original front discs, I also asked for new wheel bearings. All was fine for a couple of days then I noticed an odd noise when braking from 20 mph or less, frequency depending on speed, sounds like some non-metallic item is catching as the right front wheel rotates.  Only occurs when braking, no vibration or pulsing pedal, brakes  work smoothly.

  I remember a friend replacing his brake pads on a circa 1998 Vectra - simple enough job, he thought; done it on other cars in the past. But when he'd done it, he found that the brake pedal went straight to the floor, and he finished up somehow having to get his car to a garage with no brakes.

  Help??? I bought this car two months ago. Daughter was driving, Brakes seized.  I towed it in, had back brakes replaced.  Was fine for two days.  Daughter had it again,,,,seized gain, back bearings and cables replaced.  Fine again for few days.  Seized.

  Hi I recently took my car for mot and failed on the imbalance on driver side 32% so we bled the brakes and returned to find it failed again at 30% this time checked caliper to find it had seized, so replaced the caliper bled the brakes and took it for retest to find that it was now at 40% so very confused at the moment.

  I have been advised by the MOT tester that both my daughters rear brake hoses are perishing on her 1990 1.6 auto. I thought I would do this myself as have replaced many hoses in past on front brakes, but the access to these ones seems impossible because of the rear torque tube type suspension.
