  • a4 tdi coolant Sensor and Glow Plugs 14 May 2007 (Forum)
I have taken a look and checked all the coolant parameters and they appear to be reading correctly....does anyone know if the thermostat sensor is 'just for the glow plugs' Will it have any adverse effect if the sensor is disconnected whilst driving? I plan to get another sensor shortly but I wanted to check I had covered all my bases before getting one. Also, injection pump timing, a while ago I was told these are 'adjustable' and has an effect on the car starting (screwloose was it you?).....I will be doing the cam belt week....
  • Clio 1.6 K7M Oil Leak ? 16 Apr 2007 (Forum)
We now have a couple of drips on the drive, looking under the car it is dripping off the sump plug, the lowest point, the front of the engine is now 'wetter' and it seems is slowing acumulating enough oil to run down and form a drip over time, the oil level is not noticably dropping.
  • New Rovers 4 Feb 2007 (Forum)
And except for the galvanised 75, what state will the metal work be in under the covering of paint. And them K series engines !! Very poor at the best of times! I would not buy one, not even at these prices, So who is buting them????????? A 2 or 3 year old car, that's done average miles, from just about any other manufacturer would cost far less and be a far better bet?
  • Daewoo Matiz wet floor update. 3 Jan 2007 (Forum)
I originally thought that is was my heater matrix, and a week or so ago removed the entire carpet from the car to try and see where the water was coming from. And it has remained bone dry for a while. On thursday it rained on and off, and on friday night rained quite hard, i was driving both these nights, and kept an eye on the drivers floor for any water entering the car at all.......BONE DRY !!!
  • X-Trail Valuation in p-ex for Subaru 19 Jul 2006 (Forum)
I had downloaded a valuation from the Glass's link on this site for my X-Trail - £14650 excellent; £13200 average and £11350 below average. My car is excellent , apart from maybe needing new tyres shortly, and has covered 23000 miles. I was given a Glass's valuation by the dealer of £13100, but he said he would need to speak to a trader who would underwrite it.
  • Shock absorber failure on Vectra C 1 Mar 2005 (Forum)
I did the usual of emptying the boot (not much in there anyway) and checking the parcel shelf was secure etc etc but the noise was still there. Anyway, today I had a look underneath the car (its done 22k miles and is a Sept 2003 reg). The n/s rear shock is covered in oil , whereas its counterpart on the other side is dry. Ok so that explains the noise - looks like I need a new shock but could you chaps let me have your opinion on these points?
  • Weird Insurance Quotations 4 Aug 2004 (Forum)
As one or two may have spotted I'm in the market for a new used car. Being sensible I wanted to work out the insurance costs. It also made sense to start with my current insurer, Direct Line, as they were £150 cheaper than anyone else for my current cover. (I also like the business use they throw in).
  • VW Self Diagnosis 20 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I do not want to know what these codes are, but I am fascinated to know what type of areas these codes cover, and just what the car is doing as I drive it. Is it constantly checking everything about itself? The screenshots show messages about voltages being too high, or faults with the horn. I also understand, from the drivers handbook, that the engine management software adjusts parameters to match the drivers driving style.
  • Vectra 2.2 - Am I the first??? 1 May 2003 (Forum)
I have noticed from cold that the engine RPM dips down after de-clutching to about 500RPM, but recovers to normal idling speed quite quickly. The car has only covered 8900 miles, being privately owned before I bought it (I've put 3000 miles on in the 4 months I've owned it) and I was wondering if the low mileage has led to clogging up of the idling sections.
  • Fast fit oil change problem 3 Mar 2003 (Forum)
I returned to the place which had done the previous oil change and to cut a long story short the area manager sent me a fax stating that he accepted the threads could have been damaged when they changed the oil but similarly the second garage could have done the damage when attempting to undo the plug. He offered to cover half the cost of having a helicoil fitted and invited me to bring the car in to one of his branches for this to be done. I have since paid for the sump to be helicoiled at a cost of £100 from a 3rd garage as I did not trust any of the other two to work on my car.
  • VAG main dealer Golf TDi service 20 Apr 2002 (Forum)
I am so P*****ed off by this but I am not sure what to do next. If they are prepared to lie to me to try and cover this up then what else are they prepared to lie about? Frankly I am gobsmacked - this is a main VAG dealer not a back street outfit.
  • Just discovered I bought an ex-rental car 24 Sep 2020 (Forum)
What do people think? I know that resale value is likely to be affected if the next buyer knows it was once a hire car. The car is very tidy and drives straight, and still has 2.5 years' warranty on it), but if it has been ragged by hirers there may be premature wear in the future (clutch etc) that's not covered by a warranty.
  • Which large family estate car should I buy? 21 May 2014 (Ask HJ)

  • Astra 1.6 Design - Losing Ombudsman battle with Insurer 5 Jul 2013 (Forum)
Can my 54plate Astra be stolen without a key? Could it be started and driven away without a key? I guess we are just unlucky that we got our car stolen by an expert and they then crashed the car, but we are so lost for what to do. We are going to take the matter to a small claims court, but we’re keen to avoid the cost of it. We took legal cover with the insurance, but it's with the same company as the car insurance (or the underwriters are the same) so they aren’t prepared to help us, so we’ll have to pay for it ourselves.
  • Mileage discrepancy. 17 Oct 2009 (Forum)
I?m willing to correct my mistake but would like to cover myself. Although ideally I?d like the car back so that I can correct the mileage and resell it.
  • How long could you keep a car ? 8 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Mileage would be such that it would be more than run in so to speak ! However, I gather that the "average" motorist covers about 12,000 miles a year. Given that most cars nowadays can easily cope with a couple of hundred thousand miles without major surgery that would translate into a useful lifespan of 16.7 years. Leaving boredom etc on one side.
  • Audi Dealer Screw Up 1 May 2003 (Forum)
This is a true story of a colleague at work, make of it what you will but a £3k cheque off a dealer for a new engine is a result in anyones book…. Driving along the motorway in an A4 tdi, he hears a loud thunk, car coasts to hard shoulder and rescue truck recovers car to local garage. Local mechanic takes cambelt cover off, cambelt intact but colleague notices some fraying on belt, engine will not turn over, suspected major internal damage.
  • My car developed a fault just out of the warranty period - should I have to pay for work to be done on it? 18 Apr 2018 (Ask HJ)

  • Leo the Leaf replacement 23 May 2025 (Forum)
After viewing numerous tatty Leaf’s, and several overpriced Kia Niro’s most with zero history (so no battery warranty) and poor accident repairs, we’ve bought a 22 plate 18,000 mile VW ID3 58kwh Pro Performance Max instead - bring back L/LX/GL etc. Car is mint, approved used and as part of VW’s used car event it comes with two years VW warranty, breakdown cover, a £250 finance contribution and free servicing. If you take a PCP, which I have and will pay off immediately.
  • Any - Losing Confidence In Your Indy? 20 Dec 2019 (Forum)
She took it to the indy, who supposedly looked at, saw a minor oil leak, diagnosed a leaking rocker cover gasket (which may cost £200), said they;d tightened it but it wasn't worth fixing. The car has an airbag warning light lit, and they said it wouldn't pass the next MOT. She just called me.Fortunately, she has access to a very well qualified, non financially motivated, specialist who has looked at the car.
