  • Which new car for easy disabled access? 20 Oct 2012 (Ask HJ)
Following an accident when my left leg was damaged, I need a new car. The criteria are: easy to get in and out with seats not too low, automatic, four...
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 02 1.8TDCi car cutting out at speed 10 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Managed to get it going again but over the next few days same thing happened and it seems a common problem which others have referred to in previous posts. Car taken to a diesel specialist who said....The new fuel filter was a poor quality he had seen this problem on other cars so he fitted a new bosch filter. Over the past 3 weeks the car has been fine, so if it was ok before the filter was changed and has been ok after another filter has been fitted it seems almost certain the problem was down to a dodgy filter.
  • Renault Megane (1999 - 2002) - 01 1.6 Cambelt / Camshaft Problems 24 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Bottom end of engine reconditioned and rebuilt - we reluctantly handed over further £300 towards this (remember car is beloved). Four months on, car breaks down - squealing noise, then loss of power. Car recovered to different Renault approved repairer who stripped down engine and provided report - oil leak caused by inlet camshaft oil seal having come out of head causing damage to cylinder head.
  • Peugeot 307 SW (2002 - 2008) - 2002 2.2 Unblock diesel filter warning 17 Oct 2008 (Forum)
We were heading home after a day out and had been cruising at 40 - 50 mph on open country roads. The car drives ok with no loss of power or rev limit. The light is now off again. The car was bought from pug dealer as an approved used car in November 2007 and the service history is almost complete (the car was a demonstrator then sold and serviced by the dealer then sold to me).
  • Volkswagen Beetle (1998 - ) - 1.9 tdI Legal advice re: buying used - timing belt 22 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Hi, have finally found a Beetle for my wife, a diesel one that has 40k miles and is 4 1/2 years old. Now this is being bought from a used car dealer. I have done all the usual checks including speaking to previous owner etc so happy all that side is covered. However, the car has not had its timing belt changed. as some of you may remember this was the subject to a long thread, prompted by HJ himself as VAG had changed the frequency to 60k / 4 years for changes.
  • Diesel engine disaster 22 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Hi I've just registered on this excellent site, this is my (rather long!) first post. Incidentally I found you because this site is mentioned in the latest issue of Car Mechanics magazine which I received today (readers letters page). I wonder if any experts on here can me with a problem I have with my Ford diesel Mondeo? The car is a 2004(04) model and has done 22500 miles.

  • Knock for knock insurance? 5 Sep 2004 (Forum)
I then proceeded to fill in on a piece of cardboard the details of litres bought and miles i have covered since the last fill up, as I have done for the last 8000 miles. While i was sat down with the door opened a Ford Transit pickup tried to squeeze through between my car and a car at the pump opposite as he did so he caught the door edge and creased it back (the door is a write off) He got out of the Transit and accused me of opening my door as he passed even though i had being sat there at least a minute with the door open.
  • Fiesta noise and gearbox whine. 14 Oct 2002 (Forum)
In addition the soundproofing over the exhaust under the rear seat and in the rear wheel arches is .. negligible ... so no wonder I could hear the brakes being applied in one of the cars I tested. It's a great car but really Ford should and could have done a lot better.. I hate all noise in a car so I have covered both with soundproofing felt and added further soundproofing to the car (with a kit from HJ's recommended http://www.noisekiller.com/).

  • Renault Clio E-tech hybrid - Impressions after the first 1000 miles 21 Apr 2024 (Forum)
I am getting around 55mpg driving in a semi rural area doing mainly short journeys. Renault say that the maximum distance the car will travel in EV mode is under 2 miles. The 1.2kW traction battery is charged when decelerating or braking, there is no facility to plug into the mains. In spite of this, nearly half of the first 1000 miles has been covered in EV mode.
  • Kia Sportage 4 2022 - Paint problem 25 Jan 2023 (Forum)
My concern is the amount of work required to rectify the problem, especially as what's caused the issue hasn't been identified. I don't want a spray over of the problem only for it to reoccur - even if it is covered by warranty. Would I be best pushing for a vehicle exchange - I love the car?  Or what are your thoughts?   Thank you
  • Nissan Navara - Runaway Truck 27 Oct 2022 (Forum)
He came over last night and said the builder had been out to survey the damage and would start work in a few days. The garage said their insurance would cover the damage to the truck but our neighbour would have to pay £500 excess. A costly lapse to be sure!
  • Has Volkswagen fixed the issues with the 1.5-litre engine? 1 Jun 2020 (Ask HJ)

  • Tuscan - Hyundai Clutch/Gearbox Warranty issue 20 Mar 2019 (Forum)
Looking for some advise, my car recently stopped working, i woulld put it in gear but when getting up to speed it would make this awedul grinding noise and not go forward. Hyundai took it in to its neares dealer and we had to suthorise 1 hours inspection of £114.50 (payable if it wasnt under warranty) they then called back and advised it was a gearbox issue they would need me to authorise a further 3 hours at £114.50p/h they had told hyundai it needed a replacement gearbox and hyundai had asvised them to strip the gearbox and find out what was wrong. they then advised it was a broken clutch plate which was not covered by warranty as the car was 7 months over 2 years old and clutches are only under warranty for 2years/60000 miles. i paid the £1194 to get it fixed but asked to keep the broken parts. i took the broken parts to two seperate garages who both say that there must have been a defect as there was no wear shown on the clutch at all.
  • Scenic 1.9dci power loss / light on 2 Jul 2018 (Forum)
The car is due back in with Renault next week, and my warranty doesn't cover diagnostics! They say they have been on Renault Net, but this fault isn't a known problem. This is a potentially dangerous fault and we now avoid overtaking anything unless there is a huge safety margin.
  • Any - Identifying engine noises. 22 Nov 2017 (Forum)
Going to take it out tomorrow, simulate sitting in a queue of traffic, moving slowly and try to replicate. Hopefully it is the fan, because the indy garage where I bought the car should cover it.  I bet we all have tales of noises we thought were one thing (or maybe someone at a garage did) and they turned out to be something else entirely.
