Driving instructors 6 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Garrison's comment about being taught to apply the brake progressively when doing an emergency stop made me think about my driving instructor... Even as a beginner, he stressed the importance of watching far ahead and anticipating threats in the distance as well as up close. -
car insurance payout 4 Sep 2002 (Forum)
I am wondering if there is anything I should be aware of when trying to get the best pay out from the insurance company, It had a full service history and had just been taxed and MOT as well as having a new exhaust and Brake pads. Should I accept the first offer I get from them or is possible to haggle and get a better one. Aprox, how much should I expect to get from them? Cheers. -
Top Gear tonight. 12 Oct 2001 (Forum)
About 5mpg better than my old XUD Xantia when thrashed but 10MPG better then I've ever seen at the best. Then I do like to convert some fuel to heat via the brakes. David -
BMW X1. 2016 Model - Gear lever assembly - Faulty microswitch 21 May 2021 (Forum)
Got a 5 year old BMW X1, with only 17500 on the clock. Warning light related to parking brake comes on at ignition and switching off engine. Fault is apparently a microswitch in the gear lever assembly. My local garage (BMW accredited, NOT the dealer) says it requires a new gear level module as the microswitch can't be replaced independently. -
Silly ME! - Handbrakes on Check! 22 Jul 2019 (Forum)
The car is 181 cm wide. The porch gap between walls is 186 cm wide. Reversed in as usual. Put hand brake on and unloaded, went into house. Few minutes later heard a bump. Car parked neatly inside porch nicely between the walls, but not touching either. A plant pot by the step had stopped it so that the tailgate was still a bit away from the front door. -
Toyota Auris Touring Sports - Alloy wheels 17 Dec 2018 (Forum)
Sadly I am still stuck with alloy wheels which are a complete pig to keep clean and expose the brakes to all the weather. Does anyone else long for the easy old days of steel wheels and a wheel trim that was easy to wash and didn't need to be re-finished after a few years? -
Old;mechanical lock only - Key wont go in door lock 12 Feb 2018 (Forum)
As per subject. Have tried a skoosh with the GUNK equivalent of WD-40, to no avail. Might try solvent (brake cleaner?) and a blast with compressed air next. I see graphite sprays recommended, but I dunno if I can get them here, though I can get pencil lead. After that I suppose I MIGHT try to take it apart, but I'm not very keen. -
Hyundai i20 - ABS Pump/Modulator 14 Jul 2017 (Forum)
Hi, Recently, the ABS, brake and traction lights lit up on the dashboard. It's an i20, 2011. Took it to a Hyundai dealer to get diagnostics and came up with faulty ABS pump/HECU (quoted £1729! Yeah, whatever..). Got a used one and having it fitted today. -
Mazda 2 - Chirping/cricket like sound 22 May 2017 (Forum)
Between those speeeds and over 50 there's no noise until I start slowing down whether by using the brake or just coming g off the accelerator, then the noise comes back as the needle passes 50, 40 and 30mph. Discs and pads were replaced approx. 1k miles ago. Any advice would be sooo much appreciated. -
VW Polo 1.2 2002 (52) - ABS warning light not illuminating with ignition 29 Feb 2016 (Forum)
They said they'd sort it and it was possibly a sensor. Went back a few days later to buy and ABS light didn't come on. Dealer said the brakes were sharp so watch sharp breaking. Suspected they'd put new pads in. But noticed today it doesn't come on with ignition. Should I suspect foul play? -
Variable Speed Limit Change 28 Apr 2015 (Forum)
Driving along the M42 near Shirley last Friday which is covered by Variable Speed Limit Camera's, traffic is light & as I approach one between J4 & 3a they change to 50 limit. Quick look in my mirror & a car close behind so choose not to brake (my speed about 70) but to lift off for a few seconds. I didn't see a flash but what do you think? I have a dash cam fitted thankfully which I will show to the court if needed https://www.youtube.com/watch? -
SEAT Ibiza SC - Squeaking and Creaking 12 Feb 2015 (Forum)
There is a squeaking noise coming from the offside front tyre (or so it sounds). I have taken it to a garage who replaced brake discs and pads, they also replaced the tyre as they said the part worn tht was on there was warped and causing rubbing. The noise is still there though! Its not all the time and tends to occur when I am turning right. -
Corsa Design 2007 1.4 litre - Intermittent clutch failure 23 Nov 2014 (Forum)
Clutch was renewed 4K miles ago. Car driven only by experienced drivers who have never had a similar problem before. No brake fluid shortage and fluid was renewed 3 years ago. Am having fluid renewed again now, even though things appear to be normal 4 days later. Any other comments welcomed. -
ford focus 1998 1.8 petrol - high revving when depressing clutch 19 Jul 2014 (Forum)
The gagage think it may be the clutch is on the way out as the pedal is very high, the car pulls ok and goes into gear ok. I have noticed a slight brake cylinder leak at the back and wondered if this would possibly be allowing air into the fluid which also serves the clutch master cylinder. any help would be appreciated. -
Charged for exhaust I didn't ask for 15 Apr 2014 (Forum)
Took my to a local garage as it was due for mot, I had a quick look noticed the brake pipes looked a bit corroded so pointed that out to them said I was in no hurry , two day later got a phone call saying it had passed but had to put a new exhaust as it had failed. I was fuming as the bill came to nearly £400. -
Ford Fiesta - Minor accident-no damage to other vehicle? 3 Jan 2014 (Forum)
Given the damage done to the Fiesta, I can only assume that there must be hidden damage to the Mokka's steering, suspension and/or braking system? -
Renault scenic mk1 phase 2 1.9 dci - Renault Christmas tree dashboard 16 Nov 2013 (Forum)
Just barely. As soon as I dip the clutch or accelerate they stop flickering. It's only when I'm engine braking so to speak. Running fine so a bit puzzled. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Jim -
Renault Laguna II (2001 - 2007) - 2002 1.6 - Left hand indicator rapid blinking 17 Jan 2013 (Forum)
My left rear indicator works fine, maybe a little dim. but is ok for turning left and hazard lights turned on. However if I apply the brakes while turning left, the light rapid blinks as if on of the bulbs in the system is blown. As above tthe bulbs are all fine. I removed the unit at the rear and checked the connections an could see no apparent short in the unit. -
Nissan Micra K11 - Rear window LED bar keeps falling off 3 Apr 2012 (Forum)
The overhead LED brake light on the rear tailgate keeps falling off on one side. The LED bar is held into position by a brass plate which locates onto a rubber square fixed to the window glass. A series of dimples on the rubber plate lock into corresponding holes in the brass plate. -
Vauxhall Zafira 05 plate - Battery Light Flicks on and off 3 Feb 2012 (Forum)
Hi Everyone Just had a new battery and alternator fitted to my Zafira. However the battery light still flashes on when I brake and the revs drop to between 700 - 900 rpm. This only happens when the the air vents are on full number 7. I have had a load test done and at idle the battery is showing 14.2 under load 13.9 to 14.0.
