  World’s Cheapest Celica at Auction Today 30 Jun 2004 (News)
  While a very clean 89k mile 95M (9 year old) 318iSE sold for a startling £3,400. £2,025 was a high top bid for a 93k mile 91H (13 year old) Lexus LS400 (they can get very expensive to maintain at this age), which made an 87k mile 2001Y (3 year old) LS430 look cheap at £18,900. 92k miles meant a 2001W Audi A4 B6 TDI 100SE sold for £8,350, still a respectable amount and about what a same age and mileage BMW 320dSE would have fetched.

  Today, in just one section, you could have picked up anything from a RHD Smart to a Porsche Boxter S; from a 126,000 mile Corsa diesel to a 10,000 mile Lexus RX300; or from a red Daewoo Matiz to the red MG ZT 190 in the photo. That was a 2001Y with 41k under its wheels and looked cheap the way the bidding started. But, though it finished under trade book, it was only a couple of hundred under at £9,025 and will probably fly off a retail site for £10,499.

  So was £8,775 for a 55,000 mile 2000W Passat TDI SE badged as a 115 but described as a 90. So was £14,200 for a 33,000 mile 2000W Lexus IS200 S automatic. So was £11,850 for an old shape 42,000 mile 99V Galaxy Ghia TDI 110. The fifth car in the catalogue showed a bit, but not a lot, of relief. It was a 114,000 mile 98R Voyager 2.0SE manual and it sold for £5,625.

  £12,200 wasn't enough for a 59,000 mile 2000W Audi A3 1.8T Quattro with no sign of the essential rear suspension repair. And they wanted more than the £14,050 bid for a 21,000 mile 99V Lexus IS200SE. Where were the bargains? Check out these three: 52,000 mile 98S SAAB 9-3 2.0i 5-door with a/c, sold for £5,150; 73,000 mile 98R Toyota Celica 1.8ST, sold for £5,750; 71,000 mile 98S Honda CRV 2.0iES with a/c, sold for £7,625.

The export trade to Malaysia ensured that a 42,000 mile 97P Mercedes E230 Elegance 5-speed automatic made a whopping £17,800 - £700 more than a 46,000 mile 99T E240 V6 Elegance auto in the Top Car Sale.

  While one very happy private buyer nabbed a slightly leggy 107k mile 04 Volvo V70 D5 for just £4,000. And the 7k mile 08 reg Lexus LS600h that didn’t sell for a top bid of £54,800 last week only raised £47,000 today. Here’s the list. As usual, ‘s’ means sold. ‘p’ means top provisional bid, ‘pc’ means provisional, but close.

  Silliest bid was £32,600 for a 26,000 mile Y reg BMW X5 3.0i Sport auto on massive 20” Antera wheels with 295/40ZR20 Wrangler tyres, but with no history and no V5. Probably best buy of the day was a 63k mile 97P Lexus LS400 which had seen two too many owners and sold for a mere £10,050. Remember, BCA Blackbushe has switched its Friday LCV sale to Thursdays, so Friday’s sale is now 3 halls of cars.

  A 44k kilometre 99T 200K six-speed, which has been making regular Top Car appearances, could have been yours and hers for £13,750. Oddballs in the snatchback section included a 2001Y reg Lexus LS430 complete with performing rear seats. But the front tyres were heavily worn on the shoulders, the rear end looked sagged a bit, and the remains of a removable towbar kit could be seen under the back bumper. 41k miles were unwarranted, but 41k miles towing what?

  So who in their right mind would pay £13,800? It was the same deal with a 70,000 mile two year old Lexus IS200 SE automatic with a pebbledashed bonnet. I've yet to see a cheap IS and this wasn't it because, unbelievably, someone took the bidding to £12,600. Again, you can have a new one with the autobox for £15,999 from Trade Sales ( www.trade-sales.co.uk ), so why pay £12,600 for a rough looking 70,000 mile two year old?
