Honest John’s Motoring Agony Column 18-4-2015 18 Apr 2015 (News)
No problem getting the TT as a quattro and the Golf R is 4WD. I'd be looking at a BMW M135i or an M235i coupe if I were you, but these are not X-Drive. BMW has just introduced a 220d with X-Drive. This is a wind up I would like your thoughts on the Dacia range of cars, specifically the Dacia Sandero 1.2 16v. I am disabled and wheelchair bound. I currently drive a VW Polo automatic with hand controls fitted, but it is now 15 years old and my mechanic who I've used for years tells me it might not pass the MOT test, due to bodywork. -
The 1990s modern classics that are fast disappearing from Britain's roads 22 Dec 2017 (News)
Keith Moody added: ‘Petrolheads in their 30s and 40s grew up with these 1990s cars. They learnt to drive in them. They went on family holidays in them. They are the next-generation of classic cars – and they’re being bought by enthusiasts who want to be reminded of their connection to times, people, and places who might no longer be with them.’ Twenty-five years ago, the Mk5 Ford Escort was Britain’s best-selling car. -
Driver's insurance cancelled after insurer erroneously claims he was doing 164mph 4 Sep 2017 (News)
With any SmartMiles policy cancellation, we thoroughly investigate the contributing factors and look to advise customers on their driving behaviour. Having revisited Mr Bralant’s case, we can confirm that the speeding event did take place. Our data shows Mr Bralant’s speed was recorded at 102mph in a 70mph zone; therefore Mr Bralant’s policy will be cancelled in line with the policy terms and conditions. -
Opinion: Keep your friends close and your mechanics closer 16 Aug 2016 (News)
I passed my driving test in 1994, which was an interesting time for the car industry. It was, very much, the dawn of the electronic era, as cars moved away from being simple and easy to maintain towards being ever more electronically controlled and ECU-reliant. -

New Michelin Primacy 3 Premium Tyres: Are They 3 Ways Better? 21 Oct 2011 (News)
The reason is that the self-blocking sipes keep more of the tyre tread in contact with the surface of the road without distortion. WET CORNERING Or final test was wet cornering, driving a rear-drive Mercedes E220CDI on 225/55 R16s at 60kmh around a large roundabout subjected to a constant shower of water. At 60kmh the competitor tyre constantly broke away, either at the front or at the back. -

Mazda's highest finishing MX-5 was Car 75 driven by motoring journalists Andrew Frankel, Matt Prior, Ben Anderson and Jethro Bovingdon. A faultless drive by the four journalists saw them cross the line in an incredible 16 th place overall and sixth in class, making this result the best overall finish that Mazda has had at the Britcar 24 hour race. -

Wrathall wowed onlookers with his brand new Dynojet Toyota Avensis race car, while Nash, currently third in the standings, was on hand to provide a driving masterclass at the wheel of a Vauxhall Vectra akin to the car he races in the BTCC. Both will be in action during the BTCC’s race weekend at Croft in just over a month’s time on Father’s Day weekend, 18-19 June. -

Hidden Heroes: Chrysler Neon R/T 22 Nov 2019 (News)
Whisper it, but despite its gawky looks, the Neon R/T was a strangely rewarding car to drive. Not a true great by any stretch of the imagination, but more than the sum of its parts. The difficulty, though, is finding one. Of the 1250 imported to the UK, only 65 were still taxed and registered by the midpoint of 2019, and the dwindling number of survivors is only going one way. Read our Chrysler Neon review and buyer's guide How many Chrysler Neon survived? -
Wheeler Dealer Mike Brewer’s Camaro SS heads to auction 12 Nov 2019 (News)
Upgrades included stripping and rebuilding the 6.5-litre V8 to increase the power from 375bhp to 410bhp by way of a high-lift sports camshaft, Magnaflow exhaust system, and Hedman manifolds. There were further upgrades to the drive belt pulley system, distributor, plus the inclusion of a stainless-steel fuel tank and rebuilt Muncie M21 four-speed manual gearbox, as well as an aluminium prop shaft. Work didn’t stop there and with plans for decent quarter-mile times, the suspension, springs, anti-roll bars and anti-tramp bars were either added, rebuilt or upgraded in a bid to keep the axle located under hard acceleration. Increased power meant better brakes were required to a vacuum servo was fitted along with disc brakes all round, with the front discs grooved and cross-drilled for maximum performance. -
Hidden Hero: Rover Metro GTi 16v 4 Oct 2019 (News)
It was competitive in its early years, but by around 1993 the cracks were starting to show, with all-new rivals such as the Fiat Punto, Renault Clio and Vauxhall Corsa bringing the supermini market bang up to date. The Metro, with its external rain gutters, cramped boot, upright driving position and bouncy ride was not a brilliant supermini, even though its popularity in patriotic Middle England meant it continued to sell well throughout. There was one Metro, though, that was a real jewel in the crown. -
Hidden Heroes: Volkswagen Jetta GTi 26 Jul 2019 (News)
As well as being arguably more interesting than its good-looking wingman (as is often the case with people…) the Jetta was also a better drive, especially in 137bhp 16v GTi form. The stiffer body, aided by a rear bulkhead and less body flex, meant it was sharp, agile and very difficult to unstick, while it was also eminently more practical. Today, then, the Jetta GTi is the forgotten hero of a Volkswagen line-up that was part of a golden era for the company. -
1946 Jaguar 3½ litre Mk IV at No Reserve in Historics Auction 10 May 2019 (News)
‘No Reserve’ at Historics generally means ‘expected to make less than £10,000’ so, on the face of it (pending a close look at the car), this might start a bidding battle. Supplied originally in Ireland on 20th November 1946, this right-hand drive Mk. IV Saloon was a 1937 model put back into production after WW2, re-named ‘Jaguars’, with a 3,485cc overhead valve 6-cylinder engine giving it a top speed of 95mph. Finished in two-tone red over black and with red leather interior, this Jaguar is supplied with the Irish registration document and a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate. -
Homologation MG Metro 6R4 for sale at auction 14 Dec 2018 (News)
‘One of rallying’s true icons, the MG Metro 6R4 stands up there with legendary 80’s classics like the Audi Quattro, Lancia 037 and Renault 5 Turbo,’ explains Lionel Abbott, classic car specialist at Silverstone Auctions. Abbott added, ‘This is the closest you can get to driving a Group B rally car on the road. A homologation special like this with such low mileage presents a rare opportunity for rally fans and enthusiasts alike.’ For many rally fans, the Group B era still represents the pinnacle of the World Rally Championship, when cars were allowed unlimited amounts of boost and machines produced upwards of 600bhp. -

6th Britwell Salome Classic Car Run Raises £4,906 For Local Charities 13 Aug 2018 (News)
The engine is a 2,555cc four-cylinder 4G54 petrol, with 4-speed manual gearshift, selectable 2 or 4 wheel drive and high or low range. It never missed a beat, though with a usable cruising speed of only 80kmh (50mph) it couldn’t compete with the Ferraris on the run. Many thanks to Mitsubishi Motors for their generosity in lending it to us for the day. -
A Grand Monday: Jaguar XJ6 3.2 Sport 4 Jun 2018 (News)
Being a Sport model, the car comes with the 214bhp 3.2-litre straight-six, but with the XJR suspension set-up. They're terrific cars to drive, with a fabulous ride and handling combination that really does give the best of both worlds - a supremely luxurious car, but also one that's easy to press on with. Plus, while no Jaguar will be a paragon of fuel economy, the 3.2 is at least relatively sensible over long distances, with MPG in the high 20s achievable on a run. -
Classic cars set for MoT exemption 16 May 2018 (News)
And it means that there’s nothing to stop you giving a 40-year-old car that hasn’t moved in 20 years fresh fuel and a battery and driving it off down the road… only to find the brakes don’t work. There is also a huge grey area that is a court case waiting to happen. That’s because, technically, your car needs to be roadworthy for it to be insured.
