      The Department for Transport (DfT), which is responsible for the legislation, stipulates that alternative fuel vans must be powered by “electricity, natural gas, biogas or hydrogen or [a combination of] hydrogen and electricity”. Basically, the new legislation applies to vans that are not powered by petrol or diesel and weigh between 3500 and 4250kg.
  • Which? launches 2014 reliability survey 20 Dec 2013 (News)
    has launched its 2014 car reliability survey, and those who participate are in with the chance of winning £2500 – the equivalent of a year’s free fuel for an average family car. Last year 47,572 people responded to the Which? Car Survey, which found that the highest average repair costs were for the Land Rover Discovery 3, and that the Renault Megane Sport Tourer (2003-2009) had the lowest customer satisfaction rating.

    Its 3.0 TDI Quattro is a stylish and practical vehicle which keep an eye on the environment with impressive carbon efficiency figures. Audi has revealed that the car cuts carbon emissions and fuel consumption by more than 20 per cent. It added that the motor runs on an "extremely lightweight" engine - a 69 kg battery and a 40 kg motor. Audi commented that the vehicle combines higher power and torque with economy of fuel and lower carbon emissions.

    But Citroen reckoned a four-wheel drive version was a good idea, the end result being the 2CV Sahara of 1961 – which, instead of using a conventional all-wheel drive set-up, was fitted with an extra engine in the boot to ensure all-round traction. The two engines were completely independent units with their own gearboxes, fuel tanks and starter buttons. On flat surfaces just one of the engines could be used to save fuel, and on rough terrain the second engine (driving the rear wheels) could be engaged. To accommodate the extra engine, the floorpan was modified, while the suspension was also uprated to handle the hard work.

    As part of its Skyactiv-X, the next generation of Skyactiv, Mazda is developing a Spark Controlled Compression Ignition petrol engine. Most of the combustion of the fuel/air is by compression, as in a diesel. But to achieve a stoichiometric ‘lean burn’ air-fuel ratio of 30:1 all the fuel in the combustion chamber needs to burn simultaneously. This is achieved by adding spark ignition.

    The latest fuel price cuts from supermarkets could save motorists £200 a year as oil plummets to a six year low. As a result, p etrol prices have fallen to a low as 105 pence-per-litre and diesel to 113 pence-per-litre.

"Anything that reduces fuel consumption is welcome since motorists are paying an enormous cost in fuel at the present time," said the official. Demand for environmentally-friendly vehicles has been outlined by automobile manufacturer Ford.

    Combined consumption is stated to be 51.4mpg, but no CO2 figure is yet available. The engine is a direct injected common rail diesel with fuel pumped into the rail at 1,600 bar. Electronically controlled injectors then meter the fuel into the combustion chambers. Normally the engine puts out 184lb ft torque (249Nm), but the electronics allow what Ford calls transient overtorque for improved acceleration when the accelerator is being pressed.
  • Millers Launches New Range of Energy Efficient Oils 28 Feb 2013 (News)
    Millers Oils has launched a new range of Energy Efficient oils employing Nanotechnology that have been proven to cut fuel costs by up to 2.5% and reduce engine wear. The oils reduce friction and the result is a potential 2.5% improvement in fuel economy and up to 50% reduction in engine wear. Nanodrive Low Friction Technology was first used in motorsport gearbox and engine oils, allowing racers to release more power and torque by reducing frictional losses in the engine. The same technology has allowed the design of Millers Energy Efficient engine and gearbox oils for the everyday car.

    A further £220 million will be spent to address local traffic pinch points; however, there are no details on which roads will get the funding or when the work will be complete.  The planned rise in fuel duty has – for the seventh year in succession – been frozen at 57.9p-per-litre. The Government says this £850 expenditure will save the average car driver £130 a year and van driver £350 a year.  A further £390 million will be invested to develop ultra-low emission vehicles (ULEVs), renewable fuels, and autonomous vehicles.

    Statistics from automotive information company Jato Dynamics have shown sales of vehicles powered by certain eco fuels doubled in July, compared with the same month in 2008. However, such options may not be as popular with Brits as they are with some of our European neighbours. Italians were shown to be the most receptive to the use of eco fuels, with motorists in France, Sweden and Germany also found to be open to the idea of alternative forms of power.
