BMW to launch 2 Series Coupe

Published 28 October 2013

BMW has officially unveiled its new 2 Series which goes on sale here in March 2014. Following on from BMWs move to give its coupe models odd numbers as with the recently launched 4 Series, the new 2 Series effectively replaces the 1 Series Coupe and there will also be a 2 Series Convertible.

The two-door four seater has a longer body than the 1 Series on which it is based plus there's a wider track and longer wheelbase which should mean more interior room and even better handling. The styling of the current 1 Series may divide opinion but the 2 Series is far more handsome with more in common with the 4 Series Coupe.

Two petrol engines will be available from launch - a 220i with 184PS and the top M235i which delivers 326PS and has a 0-62mph time of just 5.0 seconds. The single diesel will be the 220d with 184PS and average fuel economy of 58.9mpg. Two more will be introduced after the initial launch, the 218d and the six-cylinder 225d.

Prices will start at £24,265 for the 218d SE and there will be four trim levels - SE, Sport, Modern and M Sport. Standard equipment has been improved compared to the 1 Series and includes BMW Professional radio with 6.5-inch colour display and iDrive controller, Driving Perfomance Control switch, automatic climate control, Bluetooth, DAB, Sport Multi-Function Leather steering wheel and rain-sensing wipers.

The SE trim gets rear Park Distance Control, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and 17-inch alloy wheels while the Sport adds sports seats and black high-gloss interior trim, as well as exclusive 17-inch alloy wheels. Modern has part leather upholstery, Dark Pearl interior trim and an exclusive 17-inch alloy wheel design.

Meanwhile the M Sport model comes with 10mm lowered M Sport Suspension, 18-inch M Sport light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design, aerodynamic bodystyling and High-gloss Shadowline exterior trim. Estoril Blue metallic piant can also be specified with the M Sport trim level. Inside, the new 2 Series has more room than the 1 Series Coupe with better front headroom and rear legroom while the rear seats split 60/40 and fold to make it somewhat practical.
