Peugeot reveals more details of 508

Peugeot has revealed more details about its new 508 - the replacement for the 407 which is due to be launched in spring 2011. Like the 407 it will be available as a saloon or an SW estate and will feature new generation e-HDi diesel engines which are fitted with a stop/start system to help improve economy and reduce CO2 emissions.

Eventually there will also be a HYbrid4 model fitted with a hybrid system that delivers 200bhp, four-wheel drive and CO2 emissions from just 99g/km. Before that, the cleanest engine will be the 1.6 HDi FAP which - when launched - will have a claimed fuel economy figure of 53.4mpg and emissions of only 114g/km. In 2011 this will improve further to a claimed 56.0 mpg and 109g/km of CO2 due to the introduction of electronically-controlled air intakes.

The new 2.2 litre HDi FAP 204bhp engine, with a maximum torque of 450Nm from 2000rpm tops the 508 range in a ‘GT' version and features a special suspension set-up. Helped by a new six-speed automatic gearbox, this engine develops a level of performance superior to the former 2.7 litre HDi V6 of the 407 but with improved fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions down from 223g/km to 150g/km.

* 2.0 litre HDi FAP 163bhp, 340Nm, 6-speed automatic; CO2: 149g/km,
* 2.2 litre HDi FAP 204bhp, 450Nm, 6-speed automatic; CO2: 150g/km.

508 petrol range:

* 1.6 litre VTi 120bhp; 160Nm, EGC 6-speed; CO2: 144 g/km,
* 1.6 litre THP 156bhp, 240Nm, 6-speed manual; CO2: 149 g/km(4),
* 1.6 litre THP 156bhp, 240Nm, 6-speed automatic; CO2: 164 g/km.
