New Small KIA

Tue, 26 Aug 2003
KIA has announced a new small car with ultra low CO2 emissions for a petrol engine. Base 1.0 version of the new KIA emits just 120g/km CO2, dropping it into the AA £75 a year VED bracket. The car’s code name is SA. Its official name will be revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show on 9th September.

Dimensions are: length 3,495 mm (11ft 6in); width 1,595mm (5 ft 3in); height: 1,480mm (4ft 10in). Headroom is quoted at 1,003mm front; 996mm rear; and legroom 1,041 front, 872mm rear. It will be available as either a four or five seater/ Luggage space is 157 litres with the rear seats up or 882 litres with them folded.

Two engines will be available at launch, both four cylinder: The 999cc offers 44.8kW (60ps) at 5,500rpm and 86.3Nm (64 lb ft) at 4,000rpm. This engine emits 120g/km CO2 but other figures are not quoted. The 1,086cc had 47.7kW (64ps) at 5,500rpm and 96.1Nm (71 lb ft) torque at 4,000 rpm. Performance figures for this are quoted as 0-60 in 15,5 seconds, top speed 95mph; combined consumption 6.0 litres per 100km (47mpg); CO2 130g/km for the manual and 153g/km for the automatic.

The car will have a choice of 14” or 15” alloy wheels and “many other attractive and useful features”, but an emergency aerosol rather than a spare wheel. It will be built “on consignment” by Donghee Auto Company at a new factory in Suhsan, a few kilometres from KIA’s Hwasung plant.
