For £16,310 Volkswagen is offering a new trim level for the 130bhp Bora TDI PD and the 150bhp 1.8T.

Named the ST, its equipment includes ABS, four airbags, air conditioning, remote central locking with an alarm, body colour bumper strips and a CD player.

The ST also boasts a six speed manual gearbox, unique design 15 inch Jarama alloy wheels, chrome instrument surrounds, front sports seats, leather-rimmed steering wheel, gearknob and gaiter. ASR with EDL (an anti-slip system) is standard, while a multi-function computer completes the package.

So at £16,310 on the road it is reasonable value for money. And with the 130PD buyers also benefit from a huge 228 lbs ft of torque, 51.4 mpg on the combined cycle and just 149 g/km of CO2, which qualifies it for £110pa VED and is excellent news for company car drivers, (See FAQ answer on this website for the price and CO2 basis for calculating next years benefit in kind tax.) A 5-speed Tiptronic automatic version is also available for £17,275.

Meanwhile, for £15,795 the 1.8T combines a 134 mph top speed and 0 to 60 mph time of 8.5 seconds with an average 35 mpg and a CO2 figure of 192 g/km. This is largely thanks to the light pressure turbo which places this car among the most efficient and least-polluting performance petrol derivatives.
