It's unfortunate but fair. The even wear is a giveaway of pretty bad clutch riding. Hydraulically operated clutches have very light pedals and it's easy to slip the clutch by resting your foot on it.
Old drivers are often terrified of stalling and rev their engines unnecessarily. Once they learn that even a hill start requires no throttle, and to not touch the gas until their foot is off the clutch, very often their confidence returns. The clutch is happier too.
