I own a good automatic '90 Vauxhall Carton 2ltr with genuine 48k on the clock. Thought ECU was faulty but jumping diagnostic output plug reveals a stream of code 12s - code for ECU initialisation (with engine running) and code 12s plus 31s with engine off (31 = no crank rpm!)so in theory - ECU seems OK!
But!!! Sport mode light flashes continously, auto box dos'nt function and have to drive manually. Anybody any idea where to start looking for fault? Any help would be appreciated.
Auto box has actualy worked on 3 or 4 occasions but when you switch off its back to manual.

Matti,
What are the exact symptoms??? IF it refuses to change gear in auto mode then I had a similar problem in my Granada. The first three gears are controlled mechanically and were fine, but 4th is controlled by the ECU and refused to engage. I eventually traced the fault to the speed sensor. If your car has crusie control or a fuel computer these won't work either, as the speed sensor is used to calculate fuel consumption, and control the cruise speed.

Are you talking about the ECU for the engine? If so, there is also a separate ECU for the gearbox, IIRC.
Sounds very much like the fault that developed on my Auto Cavalier. The selector switch on the gearbox housing is faulty.
From memory I was quoted over £200 for the part and another £100 or so to fit (prices 18 months ago). I was told at the garage upon enquiring it is more common for the switch on the Carlton's and Omega's to fail as its on the side of the gearbox and gets all the elements thrown at it from the nearside roadwheel, whereas the Cavalier switch is situated on top of the gearbox and is sheltered a bit.
More bad news, the switch is "apparantely" a sealed unit, so you can't get inside it to clean the contacts. Never actually seeing one though, I couldn't prove this.
The fault on my gearbox was intermitant. Only happened on damp/cold days. I got around it by using the gearbox manually until the engine was warm and then quickly turn the ignition off and back on, which in turn reset the gearbox ECU. The gearbox was fine for the rest of the day then.

Incorrect spark plugs can upset the ECU by radiating RF interference. Common complaint on Carltons. Find some AC Delco plugs or at a push Bosch.

More very good GM engineering!
