When going over bumps etc the car sounds like something heavy is not secured. I have checked the spare in the boot which is screwed down ok and the exhaust sems ok....any ideas?

My guess would a be a shock absorber failure, similar thing happened to me when the bushes failed.

I would expect a shock absorber to last 30K miles ish. Double-check the clearance around the exhaust silencer and look for signs of rubbing, and remove the spare wheel completely to eliminate it. There's also the tailgate fastenings to consider. Your local VW dealer may give you an opinion for free, have you tried them?
