1998 1.8td remote key - banter

hi, the car came with the remote door unlocking fob not working, i have replaced the batteries and still no good. does it need re coding and if so how please

thanks dave, have read the info you supplied and it is the system with the solid red key that we have. on a couple of occasions the key with the fob on it has opened the door but failed to start the car, does this mean the pats transmitter has had it? thanks john
