Used Car- which one? - wa2408

I am looking for a used automatic car to replace my Rover 75 which caught fire at Xmas! I only have a £1700 budget & dont know if its better to go for an older car with low mileage or a newer with high mileage? Also does anyone knows of a medium size car that is well suited to a very petite lady! Loved my Rover but there were some blind spots!
